Fourteen people evacuated themselves from a north Centralia home when a fire broke out in a back bedroom early this morning. Nobody was injured.

Firefighters called about 4:50 a.m. to the 1500 block of Crescent Avenue found a moderate amount of smoke coming from the three bedroom manufactured home, according to Riverside Fire Authority.

Acting Fire Capt. Jennifer Ternan said she believed four of the occupants were children, and there were a couple of dogs as well.

Firefighters extinguished a small amount of bedding, she said. The damage was contained to the bedroom, with only a small spot of the flooring burned, she said.

Ternan didn’t have all the details as she didn’t conduct the interview, but a 4-year-old child will be referred to the department’s juvenile fire starter program, she said.

The residents were able to reoccupy the home after it was over, she said.

CHEHALIS – Thunder storms over Lewis, Pierce and eastern Thurston counties have produced two to three inches of rain over portions of those counties since 5:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

More rain is coming.

The latest weather update prompted a new advisory about  excessive runoff which will produce elevated creeks, streams and ponding.

Do not drive vehicles into areas where water covers the roadway, the weather people warn.

A recording from Lewis County PUD states power is out in Winlock, Toledo, Vader, areas of Chehalis, Foron Road in Centralia and other surrounding areas. The message is not time stamped.

A dispatcher at PUD said damage has occurred at the BPA station and they are trying to reroute electricity, and if that doesn’t work, it could be out for a few hours.

Lightning hit inside the Corkins substation on Highway 603 just after 8 p.m. and broke a bushing, according to the PUD dispatcher.

All of Chehalis is without power, as are parts of Napavine, he said.

Traffic lights are not even blinking red. They are dark.

News brief: U-Haul truck clips pedestrian on Interstate 5, passenger cat jumps onto roadway

CHEHALIS – A 42-year-old woman walking in the slow lane on the freeway in Chehalis overnight escaped serious injury when a truck swerved and struck her with its passenger side mirror.

The U-Haul moving truck driven by a woman from Snohomish County and headed southbound just south of the Main Street overpass.

“The pedestrian was kind of thrown onto the gore point, between the exit and the freeway,” Trooper Will Finn said.

Troopers and aid called about 3:10 a.m. found Melonie M. Tevyaw’s injuries were fairly minor. What she was doing on the freeway is unclear.

“She told the trooper she was on her way to Olympia,” Finn said. “There was no disabled vehicle nearby, there was no reason she should have been on the freeway, certainly not in the lane.”

Finn said Tevya’s last known address is in Tacoma. She had no impairment from drugs or alcohol, but the investigating trooper said there was a some kind of mental issue involved, Finn said.

A sad consequence of the incident, Finn said, is the woman driving the truck was moving to Sacramento and had her cat with her in the cab of the vehicle.

When the mirror popped back, it shattered the window, the cat jumped out and was run over, he said. It didn’t survive.

Tevyaw was transported by ambulance to Providence Centralia Hospital where she was got some stitches above her eye, according to Finn.

The lightning strike victim talks with police and firefighters trying to arrange who he would allow to drive his motorcycle away before he would get back in to an ambulance.

CHEHALIS – A 59-year-old Tenino man was struck by lightning this morning as he was traveling on his motorcycle up Interstate 5 at Chehalis.

A man and his wife who were behind him saw the flash and stopped to help.

“I was behind him in my truck, the lightning came down and lit up his helmet,” Martin Zapalac said.

At first Zapalac wondered if he imagined it, but then saw the motorcyclist lean forward and move to the shoulder.

The couple had the man follow him to the AM/PM off 13th Street, where arriving firefighters and paramedics checked him out.

It happened about 9:20 a.m., just north of the LaBree Road interchange.

Medics checked his vital signs and found he had some burns on the side of his head, although minor, according to the Chehalis Fire Department.

“He seemed to suffer some hearing damage as well,” Fire Capt. Kevin Curfman said.

The man was conscious and talking, and alert enough he got out of the ambulance to try to arrange who could drive his bike to a spot for safe keeping.

He was transported by ambulance to Providence Centralia Hospital.

Zapalac said the man’s hair was burned and the inside of his helmet was messed up, but he didn’t quite seem to understand how seriously he could be hurt.

He took off his helmet and asked, “Why am I parked by the side of the road,” Zapalac said.

“I’ve never seen it strike quite that close,” Zapalac said. “It was a good strike too, cause I felt the  concussion in my truck … when the thunder came.”
