BURGLARY

• A deputy responded about 10:50 p.m. yesterday for a break-in to a detached garage at a residence on the 100 block of Union Avenue in which a commercial paint sprayer, a compound bow, gas cans, a Poulan chainsaw and various tools were stolen. It happened between 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. yesterday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

• Centralia police responded just after 3 a.m. today for an attempted break-in to a business on the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue.

THEFT

• Chehalis police were called by an individual who left a wallet, possibly in the restroom, at Wal-Mart about 8:30 p.m. yesterday. It was a purple wallet with a gold symbol containing bank cards and checks, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Nobody turned it in, according to police.

DRUGS

• A 25-year-old Chehalis resident contacted by police about outstanding warrants just before 5 o’clock this morning at the 800 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia was arrested for possession of methamphetamine. Derreck J. Larson was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• John W. Franken, 34, of Centralia, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and possession of methamphetamine when contacted by police about 9:50 a.m. yesterday at the 600 block of Jefferson Street in Centralia, according to the Centralia Police Department. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to police.

ON THE ROAD, OFF THE ROAD

• Ten people were injured when an 84-year-old motorist from Centralia failed to stop for traffic stopped in a work zone causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles yesterday in Wahkiakum County, according to the Washington State Patrol. Niels W. Paulsen, 84, from Centralia was driving a Ford F350 pickup and was transported by aid to St. Johns as were eight others, according to the state patrol. The 64-year-old driver of a Ford Excursion was airlifted to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, according to the state patrol. Troopers called at 1:25 p.m. to eastbound state Route 4 about eight miles east of Cathlamet indicate it was unknown if seven injured children in the Excursion had been wearing seat belts. The collision is under investigation.

CHICK WARMER IGNITES HOUSE FIRE

• An unattended heat lamp in a plastic container for chicks sparked a fire on the wooden front porch of an Onalaska area residence yesterday. Flames were able to get into the attic space from the front eves of the double-wide mobile home on the 600 block of Gish Road, according to Fire Investigator Derrick Paul. Lewis County Fire District 1 was called at 12:11 p.m. when a passing motorist noticed the fire, according to Paul. They were joined by personnel from Lewis County Fire Districts 8, 6 and 5, he said. The owners were not home when the fire broke out and none of the chicks survived, according to Paul.

Sting arranged at Lewis County truck stop nets suspected pimps

CHEHALIS – Following the shutdown of Backpage.com, authorities in Washington state wanted to find out where individuals who wanted to promote prostitution online might go and it didn’t take them long to find out.

“Just Google ‘Backpage replacements’,” Washington State Patrol Lt. James Mjor said.

This week, undercover detectives, in partnership with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, did just that and in a one-day sting operation, arrested five men for second-degree promoting prostitution and five women for prostitution.

Officers had responded to online advertisements consistent with offers of sexual favors in exchange for money and had the targets meet them at a truck stop along Interstate 5 in Lewis County on Tuesday. Mjor declined to be more specific about the location, suggesting further stings might be conducted.

The goal was to rescue young girls caught up in the cycle of prostitution and human trafficking, according to the state patrol.

The five women who were contacted over a six-hour stretch were un-arrested as they appear to be victims of probable human trafficking, according to Mjor. Advocates from the Federal Bureau of Investigations were on scene to provide food, water, services and contact information for them.

“This is a positive collaborative effort to end the vicious cycle of human trafficking,” WSP Chief John R. Batiste stated in a press release. “This operation not only helps protect the victims of human trafficking but also safeguards our communities from criminal activity.”

Federal authorities seized the web site Backpage.com earlier this month. The site’s adult-oriented personal ads have been controversial, with allegations from Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson for example, that the business encouraged the use of language that would attract customers for illicit activity, promoted payment methods that made transactions untraceable, stripped metadata to impair law enforcement’s ability to find victims and even deleted “sting ads” posted by law enforcement.

One of the five men was also “un-arrested” as it appeared he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, in a vehicle, Mjor said.

Three of the men they let go, pending further investigation, he said. Additional arrests and criminal charges are possible.

One of the arrestees, a 37-year-old from Spanaway, was booked into the Lewis County Jail. David P. Campagnola was charged in Lewis County Superior Court yesterday with two felonies: second-degree promoting prostitution and possession of methamphetamine.

Charging papers in the case allege he was the driver of a vehicle which brought a female to a commissioned undercover operative at the truck stop, a female who allegedly agreed to charge $200 for “full sex”.

She said Campagnola was her friend. Campagnola said she was his wife.

He told officers when he was interviewed they were both meth addicts and homeless and she earned all the money by hustling, Lewis County Chief Deputy Criminal Prosecutor Brad Meagher wrote in charging documents.

Campagnola’s criminal history includes 13 felony convictions, including two strike offenses, that date back to the year 2000. He was just released from prison around March 15, according to Meagher.

He was ordered held without bail because he got mouthy in front of the judge, according to Meagher. His arraignment is scheduled for next week.

Lewis County Sheriff Rob Snaza said in a press release that Tuesday’s work was an example of the great working partnerships among law enforcement in the area.

“This operation allowed us the ability to reach out and offer support and resources to victims, and hold those who facilitate these crimes accountable for their actions,” Snaza stated.

Tuesday’s action was part of what’s dubbed “Operation Human Freight”, an effort that included also the Centralia Police Department, Lewis County’s Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team, the Lakewood Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations and Washington State Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Division.

It was the second such effort this year. In March within an hour and a half in Fife, detectives made 14 arrests of which four were pimps, Mjor said.

BATTERY HEIST

• Chehalis police are investigating after being called to the 1000 block of Southwest Interstate Avenue about 7:45 a.m. yesterday where as many 50 vehicle batteries were removed and stolen at an RV business.

• Centralia police were called to the 1400 block of South Tower Avenue about 10:45 a.m. yesterday regarding the theft of used car batteries. The investigation is ongoing, according to the Centralia Police Department.

VEHICLE PROWL

• An officer responded to the 100 block of Southwest Interstate Avenue in Chehalis about 8:45 a.m. yesterday where someone had detached and removed a generator from a trailer. Missing is a Briggs and Stratton 6250 watt generator, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

AUTO THEFT

• A white Ford Explorer was reported as abandoned at the 1300 block of Lum Road in Centralia just before 9 a.m. yesterday, but was discovered to have been a stolen vehicle, according to the Centralia Police Department.

DRUGS

• Two people were arrested around 12:20 a.m. today at the 600 block of South Golds Street in Centralia for outstanding warrants and possession of methamphetamine. Dylon L. Favro, 25, a homeless person, and Brianna L. Gallion, 28, of Centralia, were booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• A 24-year-old Mossyrock man found slumped over in the back of a car near the 500 block of South Market Boulevard in Chehalis just before 2:30 p.m. yesterday with a hypodermic needle next to him was rousted and then arrested for possession of heroin, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Police were preparing to administer Narcan but Luke R. Mosteller became responsive so they didn’t, according to police. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to police.

BURGLARY

• Someone entered through an unlocked bedroom window of a residence at the 100 block of Northview Drive in Chehalis yesterday and stole $3,000 cash, jewelry and other currency, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The break-in occurred between 8:40 a.m. and 10:20 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

THEFT

• A deputy was called yesterday evening about a 1975 Peer tank trailer missing from an unfenced staging area of a business at the 200 block of Ritchie Lane south of Chehalis. The trailer, valued at $1,000, was last seen there on April 9, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

• Cash was reported stolen from a business at the 1100 block of North Pearl Street in Centralia at 3:30 p.m. yesterday. The suspects are a male and a female, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• Luggage was stolen from the lobby of an apartment complex at the 300 block of West Pine Street in Centralia, according to a report made to police at 11:30 a.m. yesterday.

DRUGS

• Centralia police called at 9:40 p.m. yesterday to the 900 block of South Scheuber Road are referring a case to prosecutors for possession of heroin regarding a 19-year-old Centralia man who allegedly brought drugs into a health care facility.

• An officer was called just before 11 a.m. yesterday to the 300 block of Southwest 16th Street where an 18-year-old student allegedly was found in possession of marijuana. She was cited and then released, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

• A 16-year-old driver was injured in a single-vehicle crash this morning on state Route 508 about two miles west of Onalaska. Shayna D.  McGovern was traveling eastbound and going too fast when she lost control of her car at a curve, according to the Washington State Patrol. Troopers called to the scene just before 10 a.m. report the Onalaska girl’s 2003 Hyundai Accent was totaled. McGovern was issued a citation for second-degree negligent driving, according to the state patrol. She was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital.

ROOMMATE ASSAULT

• A 70-year-old Centralia man who allegedly assaulted his roommate with a board was arrested after police were called to the 2300 block of Sirkka Avenue about 10:50 p.m. yesterday. Edward A. Guntrum was booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree assault, according to the Centralia Police Department.

CHEHALIS MAN LOSES APPEAL

• The Washington State Court of Appeals today affirmed the sentence for a rural Chehalis resident convicted in the summer of 2014 after a 19-year-old’s jaw was broken at a Centralia party earlier the same year. Cole T. Rife, who was 18 years old at the time, was sentenced to 19 and one half months in prison for second-degree assault and attempted first-degree burglary. Rife appealed, was remanded for resentencing and was given the same sentence in January of last year. He filed a new appeal on Jan. 4, 2017 and today a three-member panel of the appeals court second division issued its opinion. The justices held that Rife did not receive ineffective assistance when defense counsel failed to request Lewis County Superior Court Judge Richard Brosey be recused, because the decision may have been strategic; and that Brosey did not fail to to consider Rife’s youth as a mitigating factor in assessing his request for a sentence below the standard range.

ASSAULT

• Centralia police called just after 6 p.m. yesterday to the 100 block of South Tower Avenue arrested a 25-year-old Centralia resident who allegedly shoved a woman down, breaking the woman’s wrist. Shelby A. Whittaker was booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree assault, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• Police were called to the 900 block of South Scheuber Road at 7 a.m. yesterday where a 45-year-old man allegedly assaulted a nurse. Carlos G. Reyna was arrested for third-degree assault and booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

THEFT, THEFT, THEFT

• Multiple pieces of mail belonging to residents in south Thurston County that were discarded near Pear and Oak streets in Centralia were recovered by the Centralia Police Department about 5:30 a.m. today.

• A burglary was reported about 11:20 p.m. yesterday at the 1500 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia after the owner of the residence discovered two of his rings were missing along with a bottle of “Hydroxycut”, according to the Centralia Police Department. The case is under investigation, according to police.

• Centralia police were called just after 7 p.m. on Saturday to the 200 block of North Ash Street where an individual reported an unknown suspect broke into their residence and stole a television and a rifle. The case is under investigation, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• Bank cards missing from an employee’s workplace locker – at the 500 block of West Main Street – were found inside the purse of a shoplifting suspect on Friday afternoon in Chehalis. Chehalis police were called just after 1 p.m. when two employees of a clothing store on the 400 block of North Market Boulevard were chasing a shoplifting suspect, according to the Chehalis Police Department. The suspect got into a vehicle that stopped, but was subsequently pulled over, according to police. Angie M. Benzschawel, 45, from McCleary, was arrested for second-degree burglary, second-degree theft and third-degree theft and booked into the Lewis County Jail, police said.

• Centralia police were called at 11:23 a.m. on Friday to the 400 block of West Walnut Street where a ceiling projector was stolen from a classroom.

• Police were called to the 600 block of West Third Street in Centralia about 9:10 a.m. on Friday for a burglary to a residence where firearms, jewelry and electronics were taken.

WATER RESCUE

• Police and aid were called about 3:50 p.m. yesterday after a canoe with two occupants capsized on Plummer Lake in Centralia. By the time officers arrived, a passerby had stopped and assisted getting the subjects out of the water, according to the Centralia Police Department. They were treated for hypothermia, according to police.

ON THE ROAD, OFF THE ROAD

• A silver 2009 Dodge Challenger was left behind after it struck a light pole and a house at the 2500 block of North Pearl Street in Centralia just before 2:20 a.m. on Saturday. Arriving deputies found all occupants had fled, although a 33-year-old man with minor injuries who had been a passenger was located at the hospital, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The car was totaled, Chief Deputy Dusty Breen said.

• Carlos G. Reyna, 45, of Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail after his vehicle collided with two occupied vehicles and he fled the scene and collided with a parked vehicle around 9 a.m. on Friday, according to the Centralia Police Department. Reyna reportedly left his vehicle and attempted to gain entry into at least three other vehicles before he was apprehended by police in the case associated with South Pearl and Maple streets, according to police. Prosecutors today declined to file the felony charge.

ARGUMENT WITH KNIFE

• Deputies responding to a 911 hangup call about 1 p.m. yesterday from the 100 block of Bearcat Court in Chehalis found a 65-year-old man laying on the floor who said his step-son had held a knife to his chest and neck before shoving him to the ground and beginning to stomp him, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies found 35-year-old Jonathan B. Ramos sitting on a couch and learned he had removed the batteries from a phone, according to the sheriff’s office. Ramos was arrested for first-degree assault and booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

WOMAN CHOKED

• A 27-year-old Randle man who allegedly squeezed the throat of his significant other breaking blood vessels and leaving her with a swollen and bruised lower lip was arrested for second-degree assault yesterday. Deputies arrived to the 700 block of Silverbrook Road about 5:20 p.m. following a 911 call, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Donald T. Lester II was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

ARREST IN BURGLARY

• Information about last Friday’s burglary at the 1500 block of Bishop Road in Chehalis resulted in a search warrant served yesterday afternoon at a nearby property and the recovery of four computer monitors, a 40-inch flat screen, two bags of grass seed, nine bags of fertilizer, cinder blocks and various other items and building materials. Walter J. Hammers, 41, from Chehalis, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree burglary, second-degree theft and second-degree possession of stolen property, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Charges were referred to prosecutors related to a 16-year-old suspect as well, according to the sheriff’s office.

FRAUD

• Chehalis police were called from the 600 block of Northwest Middle Street about 10:45 a.m. yesterday to take a report of fraud.

• Centralia police were called just after 10 a.m. yesterday to take a report of a debit card that was lost in Chehalis being used at a businesses on the 1000 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia. Investigation is ongoing, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• When a 24-year-old Centralia man was contacted by police just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the 1600 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia, he allegedly identified himself as a family member and not as himself, he was arrested for identity theft. Joshua A. Loney was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

AUTO THEFT

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported yesterday that a green 1993 Acura Integra stolen from off the 700 block of Independence Road last month was found stripped on Wednesday evening on Hobson Road Southwest and Smith Road South. The LG tablet and chainsaw which were inside of it are still unaccounted for, according to the sheriff’s office.

• A 1990 four-door Honda Accord was stolen from the 1100 block of Brotherson Road in Centralia during the night, according to a report made to police about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The car has a Washington registration of BFD 5466, according to the Centralia Police Department.

Mead, 27 of Centralia, was arrested and booked into Lewis County Jail for felony eluding after fleeing from the police in a vehicle at high rates of speed and driving recklessly around 11 p.m. yesterday in an episode associated with South Gold and Chestnut streets, according to the Centralia Police Department.
