News brief: Couple escaped rollover wreck on I-5 at Napavine with minor injuries

Authorities said an oscillating and whipping trailer behind a sport utility vehicle driven by a Canadian couple on a camping trip caused the wreck yesterday on Interstate 5 at Napavine.

Firefighters and troopers called about 10:30 a.m. found the vehicle and trailer flipped over the center concrete barrier near the Rush Road interchange. Lewis County Fire District 5 had to break a window to extinguish a small fire inside the 1993 travel trailer.

Angela D. Neilson and Calvin R. Mojak, both of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, suffered only minor injuries.

District 5 Firefighter Brad Bozarth attributed that in part to front and side air bags in the 2003 Ford Explorer.

“For a bad situation, it turned out alright,” Bozarth said this morning.

Washington State Patrol public information officer Trooper Steve Schatzel said its something that can happen especially when traveling down hill.

“Basically the trailer starts trying to pass the car and once it gets far enough out, it actually pulls the car onto its side,” Schatzel said.

Most older trailers don’t have anti-sway brakes which can prevent that, he said.

Schatzel said he didn’t know which direction the pair were initially traveling. Bozarth said he thought they were southbound.

NAPAVINE – A car and trailer flipped over landing with one on each side of the center barrier of Interstate 5 at Napavine this morning.

The 10:35 a.m. accident left southbound traffic crawling nearly as far back as the Labree Road interchange almost an hour later.

The man and woman involved escaped serious injury and seemed to be okay, Napavine Police Officer Silas Elwood said after troopers arrived.

“They were pretty lucky,” Elwood said, adding the woman looked like she just had a scraped knee.

• A pair of jeans that got caught up beneath a semi-truck apparently ruptured a fuel line and caused a diesel spill on Interstate 5 last night that drew a fire department, Department of Transportation personnel and a tow truck driver. Lewis County Fire District 5 was called about 11 p.m. to the east side of the freeway near the U.S. Highway 12 and Avery Road interchange where the truck driver had pulled over after hearing “a lot of noise,” fire Lt. CHEHALIS – A man arrested four times in one month in Centralia and Chehalis for crimes involving drugs and burglary was sentenced yesterday to 12 and half years in prison.

Daniel J. Miller, 49, was the individual who inadvertently led police to a Reynolds Avenue home where an officer found some of his own belongings among what was described as truckloads of stolen property and was also the man captured by a police dog after breaking into the Centralia Police Department’s training facility on Mellen Street on July 1.

A plea agreement finalized yesterday in Lewis County Superior Court included Miller pleading guilty to five felonies in exchange for some half dozen other potential charges being dropped, according to defense attorney Dan Havirco.

Miller was arrested June 3 when Centralia detective Sgt. Pat Fitzgerald spotted him driving in the south end of town and confiscated suspected methamphetamine, oxycodone, methadone and hydrocodone. Fitzgerald was on his way to court to get a search warrant signed in connection with the the stolen property investigation.

He was arrested the following weekend in Chehalis when an officer was investigating possible vehicle prowlers in the middle of the night behind an auto shop, according to Havirco.

A week later, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested Miller again after a woman returned to her Graf Road home to find it ransacked.

Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Beigh said a co-defendant of Miller’s was sentenced on Friday to prison. It was immediately clear which case that involved.
