News brief: Cause of Dog Mountain Fire discovered

Investigators have found the Dog Mountain wildfire that scorched about 200 acres in early May was caused by an exploding target used by someone.

Who that someone is, they don’t yet know, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The blaze that began on private timberland owned by Port Blakley was fought by about 100 firefighters and two helicopters. Dog Mountain south of Glenoma at the east end of Riffe Lake is a widely-used favorite spot for hang gliders.

DNR spokesperson Janet Pearce said target shooters use the devices which can be purchased commercially or homemade to identify if they’ve hit their mark. But they are prohibited on land protected by DNR, she said.

Pearce said an individual determined to have caused a wildfire can be liable for the cost of suppressing it. She didn’t yet know the total spent on the Dog Mountain fire.

“It can be a pretty extensive payback,” she said.

Officials who manage forest lands are asking for extra caution this holiday weekend, citing the risks of fireworks, campfires and other activities during wildfire-friendly conditions.

Fireworks are prohibited in National Forests and on state-protected public and private lands.

Lint built up in a dryer is blamed for a house fire last night in Chehalis.

Crews called at 9:45 p.m. to the home on the 300 block of Cascade Avenue found smoke coming from the basement and first floor windows of the home, according to the Chehalis Fire Department. The couple had gotten outside, according to Fire Capt. Ted McCarty.

The fire damage was limited to the basement but there was smoke damage throughout the house, McCarty said. Nobody was hurt.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about four hours, conducting salvage, overhaul and investigation activated, according to Chief Jim Walkowski.

The cause was found to be an accumulation of lint in the dryer, which was in operation at the time, according to Walkowski.

A statewide burn ban starts on Monday and runs through September on  all forestland and other property that is protected by the state Department of Natural Resources.

Exceptions include recreational use in approved fire pits in designated campgrounds, according to a news release from DNR.

“The threat of wildfires from escaped outdoor burning is highest during the hot and dry days of summer,” Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark stated. “Wildfires are serious threats to public safety, private property and wildlife habitat. We must take prudent steps to prevent wildfires and minimize the large expenditures of public resources spent to fight them.”

Already this year, 57 wildfires have started from escaped outdoor burn piles, according to the state agency.

CHEHALIS – Chehalis police are asking for the public’s help after a scary incident for employees at K-Mart at closing time on Friday night.

Officers were called to the store on the 1200 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue about 9:20 p.m. as workers were searching for a shopper who hadn’t left the building, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

A review of security footage showed he had been hiding in an unused room at the back of the store, changed his clothes and donned a ski mask and gloves, according to police. He was also carrying some kind of handgun, Deputy Chief Randy Kaut said.

While employees looked around, they they heard an alarm at a rear door, when the subject fled the building, police said. Arriving officers did not locate him.

Kaut said initially it was believed he was intending to shoplift, but it seems he may have planned to rob the retailer after it was closed to the public.

In the beginning, the suspect was wearing a white baseball cap, sunglasses, a large dark blue or black “puffy” jacket with four letters of writing on the front, dark blue jeans, and dark colored shoes with white soles, according to police.

When he left, he was wearing a ski mask, a black T-shirt, blue latex gloves and the same pants and shoes, police said.

If the public has any information, they are asked to contact the Chehalis Police Department at 360-748-8605.
