POLICE SEEKING MAN MISSING FROM CHEHALIS

• Chehalis police are looking for a 24-year-old man reported missing who was staying at a house on West Main Street operated by Cascade Mental Health. Robert Springer has significant medical needs as in his medication, which he left behind, according to the Chehalis Police Department. He is described as 5-feet 9-inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair, according to police. Detective Sgt. Gary Wilson said Springer is of Korean descent, does not drive and has no cell phone. Police had an unconfirmed report of him in the Toledo area, he said. Wilson said Springer has a past history of becoming violent without his medication. His mother called police yesterday and said she had not spoken with him since Friday morning. Police don’t know when he left or what he was wearing, Wilson said.

CHILD ASSAULT

• A 22-year-old Chehalis man was arrested for third-degree assault of a child following a visit  by Child Protective Services and a police officer to a home on the 400 block of Northwest Division Street in Chehalis yesterday afternoon. The 5-year-old son of his girlfriend was found with significant bruises on his buttocks and face, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Jonathan D. Greyeagle was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to police. Detective Sgt. Gary WIlson said he didn’t know for sure when it occurred as the bruises had begun to heal.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported this morning that a deputy responded on Friday night to an apparent attempted break-in to a home while it’s occupants were getting ready to go to bed. A 74-year-old man at the 200 block of Howe Road called 911 about 9:20 p.m. to say the couple had heard a loud bang and discovered someone tried to break in through a back door.

VANDALISM

• A woman called police about 12:40 p.m. yesterday when she heard what sounded like a rock hit a window at the 500 block of West Cherry Avenue in Centralia. A BB-sized hole was found in the glass, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• Centralia police were called yesterday to take a report that someone spray painted green on a headstone at the 1800 block of Greenwood Cemetery on Van Wormer Street. Sgt. Stacy Denham said it may be related to an incident that occurred a month or so ago.

• Centralia police took a report yesterday morning of graffiti painted on a garage door at the 500 block of West Hanson Street.

HIT AND RUN

• Centralia police called about 12:40 p.m. yesterday regarding a hit and run in a parking lot subsequently arrested Allen D. Miller, 56, for driving under the influence, in the area of the 1100 block of Belmont Avenue. Miller, a Centralia resident, was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

INDUSTRIAL PARK BREAK-IN

• Four individuals were arrested after a deputy responded to a silent burglary alarm about 2 a.m. on Sunday at a building in the Chehalis Industrial Park. Three people seen running from the area at the 100 block of McBride Court were detained and then arrested for burglary, as was an individual contacted down the road, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Stolen were several gas cans and gas cards and other items, according to the sheriff’s office. Booked into the Lewis County Jail were Brent J. Nason, 24, and Edwin A. Castillo, both from Seattle, as well as Cameron D. Wynn, 22, of Bonney Lake, according to the sheriff’s office. A 17-year-old girl was also booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center, according to Sgt. Rob Snaza. Their vehicle turned out to be stolen from Seattle, Snaza said. The investigation is continuing.

FAILED SHOPLIFT

• Chehalis police found a 22-year-old suspect hiding in the bushes near Wendy’s restaurant after being called to Wal-Mart for a person who ran out of the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise at about 12:08 a.m. on Saturday. Mary K. Tauro, a homeless person from DesMoines, was arrested for second-degree theft and booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Chehalis Police Department. She allegedly tried to steal $816 worth of clothing, jewelry and other items, according to police.

STOLEN 27-SPEED BIKE

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported this morning that a $1,000 Trek bicycle with a rifle rack on its handle bars was reported stolen on Thursday from a residence in the 3000 block of Prill Road in Centralia. The 27-speed bike was taken sometime between Aug. 1 and Aug. 13, according to the sheriff’s office. Sgt. Rob Snaza said the case is under investigation.

SERIOUS DISPUTE

• A 30-year-old Tumwater man was arrested on Saturday evening for allegedly threatening to kill a 25-year-old, with whom there was a no contact order, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Police called about 5:45 p.m. to the 300 block of Southwest Third Street in Chehalis arrested Jonah M. Johnson for felony harassment and booked him into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

CAR DUNKED

• A deputy was called last night to the 600 block of Mineral Hill Road in Mineral after a 20-year-old Eatonville woman discovered someone had pushed her car into a nearby pond. It happened sometime between 8:20 p.m. and 9 p.m. while she was at a residence looking for a friend, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. She said she didn’t know who would do that to her Saturn station wagon, Sgt. Rob Snaza said. The case is under investigation.

DRUGS

• A 29-year-old Rochester man arrested about 1 a.m. today at the 1200 block of Borthwick Street in Centralia for an outstanding warrant was also arrested for possession of methamphetamine, according to the Centralia Police Department. Michael D. Snyder was booked into the Lewis County, according to police.

• A 27-year-old Chehalis man was arrested for a drug violation after a “couple of pills that might by Oxycontin” were found on him during a traffic stop yesterday afternoon in Chehalis. An officer followed an erratically driven motorcycle about 3:20 p.m. to an alley near Southwest Wilson Avenue and 13th Street where Derek W. Burke was detained for allegedly driving under the influence, according to the Chehalis Police Department. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to police.

• A 55-year-old Centralia man was arrested for possession of methamphetamine  when contacted about a warrant from the state Department of Corrections at about 9:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Twin City Town Center in Chehalis. A small plastic baggie containing a crystal substance was found on the ground near him, according to police. Daryl A. Ball was booked into the Lewis County, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

CAR PROWL

• A deputy was called about noon on Sunday to the 400 block of Independence Road west of Chehalis where someone had prowled through vehicles belonging to five people overnight which were parked in a field during a large wedding the day before. Among the missing valuables were musical instruments, cash, credit cards, tools, and cell phones totaling about $4,000, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. It happened between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., Sgt. Rob Snaza said.

VANDALISM

• Police were called about 9 a.m. on Saturday regarding someone keying a profane message onto a 23-year-old woman’s BMW parked on Southeast Adams Avenue.

• A 47-year-old Centralia man was arrested for breaking a fence during a dispute at the 1100 block of F Street in Centralia early this morning. Harvey C. Maddux was booked into the Lewis County jail for third-degree malicious mischief, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• A red 1987 Ford Ranger was reported stolen just before 2 o’clock this morning from the 1700 block of Cooks Hill Road in Centralia. The 4×4 truck is described as lifted with big tires and a license plate reading B82918G, according to the Centralia Police Department. Its keys had been left inside, according to police.

POLICE: VEHICLE PROWLERS CAUGHT

• A 19-year-old and two younger teens found themselves in trouble in connection with car prowling early yesterday morning in Centralia. Officers responded just after 1 a.m. to the 700 block of South Gold Street in Centralia and arrested Robert D. Knechtel, 19, of Centralia, for vehicle prowl, possession of stolen property and minor in possession of alcohol, according to the Centralia Police Department. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail. The cases involving the boy and the girl are being referred for possible charges of vehicle prowl, according to police.

VANDALISM

• Centralia police took reports of several incidents of graffiti found on the sides of buildings yesterday, including at the 400 block of North Oak Street, 200 block of West Center Street and the 800 block of North Tower Avenue.

• Centralia police responded to the 11000 block of Harrison Avenue about 4:30 a.m. today regarding the windshield of a vehicle being smashed with a rock.

WRECK

• A 49-year-old Chehalis man, Robert O. Holmquist, was injured but not transported to the hospital yesterday evening after a wreck following a tire blow out on his 1996 Chevrolet stepside van on Interstate 5 near the Chamber of Commerce Way interchange, according to the Washington State Patrol. Holmquist was traveling southbound just before 7:30 p.m. and his truck ended up traveling all the way to the right, then all the way back to the left striking the center barrier and rolling, coming to rest on its wheels, according to the state patrol. No citation is expected, according to the investigating trooper. He was wearing a seat belt. The truck was totaled.

COINCIDENCE, OR RESTAURANT RAGE?

• Centralia police were called to O’Blarney’s restaurant on the 200 block of North Tower Avenue about 6:45 p.m. yesterday after a large window in front was shot with a BB and shattered. A group of six customers sitting outside beneath it didn’t see how it happened but an officer found the BB, according to the Centralia Police Department. Police were looking for a customer who said he was unhappy with his order, paid for it and left moments earlier; the bartender saw the man outside, according to police. Nobody was injured, Sgt. Carl Buster said.

DRUNK AND SUPER DISORDERLY

• A 20-year-old Boistfort woman who was reportedly very drunk and running naked down a rural road was booked into the Lewis County Jail for two counts of third-degree assault of an officer. Deputies dispatched about 10:50 p.m. yesterday to the area of Pe Ell-McDonald and Boistfort roads west of Chehalis found Cassandra L. McBride with “some” clothing on but highly intoxicated and uncooperative, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. She indicated she had come from a home on WIldwood Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Once in the back of a patrol car, McBride allegedly kicked at the vehicle windows and then kicked a deputy, according to Sgt. Rob Snaza. At the jail, she spit in the face of a corrections officer, Snaza said.

ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

• Chehalis police were contacted by an individual very early yesterday morning who reported a rape. The case is under investigation, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

VEHICLE THEFT

• A woman called police about 9:30 a.m. yesterday after her Dodge van vanished from where it had been parked the night before at the 300 block of Southwest Third Street in Chehalis. It was found by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office on Black Hawk Lane, heavily damaged and missing its tires and wheels, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

• Police were called about 6:30 p.m. yesterday by an individual who saw a male in a black Toyota Celica stop and remove a car battery and gas cans from inside a carport at the 200 block of Aurora Street in Centralia.

CAR TAMPERING

• A woman called police just before 11 a.m. yesterday after discovering someone had removed all the “relays” from the fuse boxes in both her Volkswagen Jettas while they were parked on the 100 block of Northeast Washington Avenue in Chehalis, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

PHONY MONEY ORDER DOESN’T FLY

• A landlord called police yesterday morning after receiving the rent payment for an apartment on the 300 block of North Tower Avenue in  the form of an apparently fake money order.

UNWELCOME WAKE UP CALL

• A resident on the 900 block of Northwest Pennsylvania Avenue in Chehalis called police just before 5 a.m. yesterday after someone threw a package of lit fireworks on to their front porch.

STASH FOUND?

• Chehalis police were called on Wednesday afternoon when a citizen found a case of beer, with only a couple missing, in an alley near the 300 block of Southwest 14th Street.

INMATES AT LARGE LOCATED IN CHEHALIS

• Chehalis police responded to Valley View Medical Center on the 2600 block of Northeast Kresky Avenue about 4:55 p.m. yesterday when they got word an inmate on furlough from the Lewis County Jail who had not returned as expected the day before was spotted there. Jeffrey A. Church, 38, from Onalaska, was taken into custody and back to the jail, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

• Chehalis police were called about 6:10 p.m. by someone who spotted an inmate on furlough from the Lewis County Jail who had not returned as expected. Kevon L. Tracy, 41, of Chehalis, was walking along North Market Boulevard and observed by a person who had seen him featured on the Washington’s Most Wanted web site, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Tracy was taken into custody near the Lewis County Historical Museum, returned to the jail and booked for first-degree escape, according to police.

NO CITIZEN’S ARREST

• Centralia police responded to the Chevron gas station on Mellen Street in Centralia about 12:30 p.m. yesterday when a man told the owner he was placing him under citizens arrest for selling synthetic drugs and calling police. He was a father in his 40s, upset the store carried something called “potpourri” that apparently his daughter was smoking and getting “wigged out,” according to the Centralia Police Department. “We go there and had to explain to the guy, this is legal to sell, it’s not a controlled substance,” Sgt. Carl Buster said. “I told him, you cannot be placing anyone under citizens arrest in this state, or you could be held liable for unlawful imprisonment.” Buster said the father hadn’t handcuffed or touched the man he wanted to arrest. Nobody was arrested.

WRECKS

• A 59-year-old Salkum man was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a wreck on U.S. Highway 12 in Ethel yesterday in which his car left the roadway to the right crossed the ditch and traveled approximately 100 feet on the grass before rolling several times. Troopers called about 4:30 p.m. found the 1990 Lincoln Town Car in the westbound lane. The driver Arthur E. Marker had not been wearing a seat belt, according to the Washington State Patrol. An unknown medical condition caused the collision, according to the state patrol. Marker this afternoon was moved out of the intensive care unit and listed in satisfactory condition, according to a hospital spokesperson. The car was totaled.

• A motorist was taken to Providence Centralia Hospital after a reported rollover collision on the 200 block of North Military Road east of Winlock at about 2 o’clock this morning. Further details were not readily available.

• A 73-year-old man trying to check into a Centralia motel yesterday evening apparently took issue with a requirement, under Centralia municipal code, that he show his identification in order to get a room. Police say Robert K. Stone, of Edmonds, threatened to go get a gun and shoot the person behind the desk at the Peppertree Motel. “The clerk was scared, terrified actually,” Officer John Panco said. Officers called about 6:40 p.m. to the 1200 block of Alder Street subsequently located their suspect at a nearby restaurant, according to the Centralia Police Department. Stone was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for harassment, according to police.

THEFT

• A 78-year-old Mossyrock area woman called the sheriff’s office yesterday to report her home had been burglarized on Monday between 12:45 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy who responded to the 200 block of Klickitat Creek Road learned that numerous items totaling almost $1,800 were missing, including a 25 caliber revolver, four bottles of alcohol, a purse, jewelry and an antique clock, according to the sheriff’s office.

• A man called Centralia police yesterday to report a handgun he kept at his workplace on the 300 block of North Tower Avenue had been stolen. The case is under investigation, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• Centralia police were called about 10:30 p.m. yesterday regarding theft of a stereo from a vehicle at the 1000 block of West Main Street.

A LITTLE ROAD RAGE

• A motorist who said he slammed on his brakes to get the vehicle behind him to stop following so closely was cited for second-degree negligent driving after a rear end collision early yesterday morning on the 100 block of Newaukum Valley Road southwest of Chehalis. Neither driver was injured, but both vehicles – including David C. Rader’s 1991 Chevrolet pickup – were damaged, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The other driver, a 30-year-old from Mossyrock, was cited for following too closely, Sgt. Rob Snaza said.

WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS LOOKING FOR HANDOUTS

• Firefighters will be returning to an intersection on Belmont Avenue near the Centralia Outlets this afternoon from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. to continue their “Fill the Boot” campaign. It’s an annual event to raise money for muscular dystrophy, according to Riverside Fire Authority Capt. Terry Ternan.

LOADER BURNS AT LUMBER MILL

• Members of four fire departments descended upon a lumber mill in the Chehalis Industrial Park yesterday when a large log loader caught fire. Crews called just before 1 p.m. to Cascade Hardwood on Ribelin Road found the burning piece of equipment parked, fortunately, about 30 yards from stacks of logs, according to Lewis County Fire District 6. “If it had spread to the log yard, we’d still be there,” Firefighter Mike Goodwillie said this morning. It took about 15 personnel and almost two hours to extinguish the blaze, which destroyed the $400,000 loader, according to Goodwillie. “The tires themselves were about 6-feet tall and on top of that, there were spot fires of grease and oil,” he said. “It was very large, the largest vehicle I’ve ever fought.”

DEER WRECK

• A 21-year-old woman totaled her Honda Civic but sustained only minor injuries when she swerved to avoid hitting a deer and ended up in a ditch early yesterday morning on the 900 block of Bunker Creek Road west of Chehalis, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. It happened about 6 a.m. and the Chehalis resident was taken to Providence Centralia Hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

HIT AND RUN

• A 21-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly struck two vehicles in a parking lot on the 1400 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia overnight and then left. An officer called about 2:30 a.m. was told someone heard it happen and then her vehicle was found parked in the area, according to the Centralia Police Department. Kayla M. Burleson, of Centralia, was booked into the Lewis County Jail for hit and run, third degree driving with a suspended license and for an outstanding warrant, according to Officer John Panco.

OOPS

• A 17-year-old boy reporting for a “UA” at the Lewis County Juvenile Justice Center found himself in trouble when a search of his bag turned up a pipe yesterday. A Chehalis police officer responded about 11 a.m. and took the item which smelled of burnt marijuana, according to the Chehalis Police Department. The case will be referred to juvenile prosecutors for a charging decision, according to Officer Linda Bailey.

• Someone stole several pieces of jewelry, an iPod and about $100 cash in a burglary at the 1000 block of Scammon Creek Road in Centralia, according to a report made to police about 11 a.m. yesterday.

• A 78-year-old Morton area woman called the sheriff’s office yesterday after discovering a burglary at her home on the 400 block of Dodge Road. Among the missing valuables are several pieces of jewelry, including a diamond wedding ring and freshwater pearls, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The loss is estimated at $3,500, according to the sheriff’s office.

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported this morning that a deputy responded last Friday to a burglary at the 200 block of Drews Prairie Road near Toledo in which roughly $1,600 worth of property was taken. It happened between 12:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. Among the items missing are clothing, two laptop computers, an iPad, a Wii game system and a Canon camera with lens, flash and and case, according to Sgt. Rob Snaza.

CAR PROWL

• Morton police were called about a vehicle prowl at the 400 block of Temple Avenue on Saturday morning. Some of the missing property was later found in a nearby yard, according to the Morton Police Department.

PETTY THEFT

• Chehalis police were called after a woman was observed picking up change from the fountain in front of the library yesterday afternoon. A suspect was located in the area and returned approximately $2 in coins to an officer, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

• Chehalis police took a report yesterday of a possible sexual assault of a teenage girl. The case is under investigation, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

ATTEMPTED FRAUD

• A man who lives on Snively Avenue in Chehalis reported to police yesterday he received a phone call from a male claiming to be be his grandson who needed funds to get home from Cancun, Mexico. The potential victim of a scam told the caller to get the money from his parents and hung up, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

VANDALISM

• Centralia police were called about 2:30 p.m. yesterday to the 1100 block of North Washington Avenue where someone had apparently shot one vehicle with a pain ball gun and another vehicle with a BB gun, according to the Centralia Police Department. The case is under investigation, according to police.

WILDFIRE FIGHT

• Personnel from fire districts in Morton, Toledo and Napavine headed out over the weekend to assist with a wildfire in Chelan County, which was 70 percent contained as of yesterday. The so-called Milepost 10 fire – about eight miles south of Wenatchee, near Malaga – was sparked by lightening late Friday night and threatened some 150 residences, according to information from the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. Megan Van Egdom, of Lewis County Fire District 5, took the opportunity to remind  the public to be safe during fire season by making sure the exterior of their homes are cleared of any vegetation or debris.

TRAFFIC MESS

• A log truck making a turn at East Reynolds Avenue and North Pearl Street in Centralia yesterday morning bumped a utility pole and ended up pulling down live wires and snapping the pole, causing an hours-long closure of the road. Aid was called to the scene just after 10 a.m. as a woman on the sidewalk was struck in the head with something which possibly fell during the incident. She just wanted to make sure she wasn’t bleeding and did not need to go to the hospital, according to Riverside Fire Authority. Personnel from the state Department of Transportation and Centralia City Light responded and made repairs. North Pearl Street, which is part of state Route 507, was closed until about 7 p.m., according to Fire Capt. Ken Colombo.

TRAFFIC DANGER

• A 25-year-old motorist from Roy was arrested on Saturday afternoon after he allegedly drove through multiple camp sites which were being used by people at Gus Backstrom Park in Morton. Austin A. Coda’s vehicle was impounded and he was cited for reckless endangerment, according to the Morton Police Department.

• A 25-year-old woman detained for driving under the influence overnight was arrested for that as well as reckless endangerment as she had her two children in the vehicle with her, according to the Centralia Police Department. Mary A. Orlik, of Centralia, was booked into the Lewis County Jail after the approximately 2 a.m. contact with an officer, according to police.
