Firefighters called just after 8 o’clock were told she was headed north on Pheasant Road and for whatever reason couldn’t stop at the stop sign on Borst Avenue and continued through the yard and into the structure. Plea bargain struck in Riffe’s 1980s child sex case

CHEHALIS – There will be no trial as to whether former Mossyrock resident Ricky Riffe sexually abused his 9-year-old step-daughter in the mid-1980s.

It was scheduled to start next week, but instead he is expected in court tomorrow to plead guilty to something less than originally charged, as part of a plea deal.

Ricky Riffe

Riffe, 55, was sentenced last year to nearly 103 years in prison, following a lengthy trial and his conviction in the 1985 kidnapping, robbery and shotgun deaths of an elderly Ethel couple, Ed and Minnie Maurin.

Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer confirmed this afternoon that a change of plea hearing will take place tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in Lewis County Superior Court, but declined to say more.

Riffe’s Seattle-based defense attorney John Crowley confirmed he and prosecutors made a deal.

Riffe was arrested in the summer of 2012 in the Maurin homicides and brought to Lewis County from his home in Alaska. The following February, prosecutors charged him with what was then called statutory rape as well as indecent liberties, saying new information came to light.

He appeared in court briefly a week ago, as lawyers talked about a defense motion to move the child sex abuse trial to another locale, with Crowley contending his client would not face an impartial jury in Lewis County.

Crowley said late this afternoon the plan is Riffe will plead guilty to one count of indecent liberties, an offense that would have a standard sentencing range of around five years in prison. He also declined to say more.

CHILD VERSUS VEHICLE

• Police and aid were called just before 8 o’clock this morning to a collision between a vehicle and child at the 600 block of Northwest Prindle Street in Chehalis. Responders said the 10-year-old girl ran into the street without looking and right into the side of a moving sport utility vehicle. The girl’s injuries were so minor – bump on head and scraped leg – she didn’t need to go to the hospital, Chehalis Fire Department Capt. Derrick Paul said. She missed her bus, so was given a ride to school in their fire engine, according to Paul. No fault was found on the driver’s part, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

LOST CHILD

• Centralia police were called yesterday afternoon when a 10-year-old girl didn’t arrive home after school. Sgt. Stacy Denham said the mother had already called the school, suspecting her daughter got on the wrong bus. When he arrived and phoned the school bus garage, they were just finding her on another bus, Denham said. “That is pretty common, especially right when school starts,” Denham said.

FOUND CHILD

• Centralia police were called yesterday morning when an individual on Oxford Avenue found a toddler in a diaper walking down a sidewalk. Officers attempted to locate the parents by knocking on doors, since the little boy couldn’t talk to say where he came from, according to the Centralia Police Department. Police called Child Protective Service who took the little one into protective custody, he said, but after about an hour found where he belonged. “My understanding is the child was a couple blocks from his house,” Denham said. “Mom was at work, dad was asleep and the child snuck out.” Denham said he didn’t know if the little one was returned to his family, as CPS in such cases conducts its own investigation.

BURGLARY IN WINLOCK

• A deputy was called yesterday to the 400 block of Hart Road near Winlock after a property owner returned after being gone several days and discovered someone forced their way into a shop building and stole about $6,000 worth of items including auto parts, a generator and a lawn mower, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

FRAUD IN CHEHALIS

• Chehalis police were called about 10:20 a.m. yesterday to a business on the 2100 block of North National Avenue regarding possibly a forged check or checks in an amount of more than $500. The case is under investigation, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

• A business on North Market Boulevard in Chehalis called police yesterday after being notified by their bank that someone attempted to conduct a transaction via Western Union using their account, in an amount of about $800, according to the Chehalis Police Department. The case is under investigation, according to police.

DRUGS

• A 48-year-old homeless person from Ashford was arrested for possession of methamphetamine yesterday in Centralia after contact with an officer about 1:30 p.m. at the 200 block of Northup Street. Police were called about suspicious person in the area pushing a cart and found that Jonathan M. Davis had a warrant out of Fife, according to the Centralia Police Department. Suspected meth was found and Davis was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to police.

HIT AND RUN

• Centralia police are looking for the male driver of a gold Mustang that caused considerable damage when he backed into a gas pump last night at the 2300 block of North Pearl Street. The car fled the scene, according to the Centralia Police Department. There was no fire, but it left a big dent in the pump, according to police. The car should have damage on its rear driver’s side, according to police.

AND MORE

• And as usual, other incidents such as arrests for warrants, shoplifting, driving under the influence, driving with suspended license; responses for alarms, disputes, fender bender, hit and run to a city light power box with minor damage, kids on skateboards … and more.

ARROW PIERCES HUNTER’S LEG

• A hunter injured by his own arrow in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest was flown to the Chehalis-Centralia Airport last night to meet up with an ambulance. Chehalis firefighters and AMR responded about 8 p.m. to meet the patient who had been hurt around 11 o’clock yesterday morning about 14 miles northeast of Mount St. Helens, according to responders. He was with his grown daughter and a friend in a very rough and rugged area near Pinto Rock, east of where Forest Service Road 99 connects with Forest Service Road 25, Chief Ben Peeler of North Country EMS out of Yacolt said. “There was a slip or fall and the arrow came out of his quiver and went through his lower leg and stuck,” Peeler said. His friend hiked out about three hours in order to call 911 and their Volcano Rescue Team was activated, Peeler said. A helicopter from King County was able to hoist the patient out, he said. Peeler said he didn’t know what hospital he ended up getting transported to. Because the daughter couldn’t go in the helicopter, the team spent the night with her and they hiked out this morning, according to the chief.

Man who jumped into Lake Mayfield yesterday presumed drowned

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014

Updated at 1:09 p.m.

Lewis County Sirens news reporter

CHEHALIS – Deputies last night confirmed that a 51-year-old Winlock man never returned home after an outing at Lake Mayfield yesterday and he is presumed drowned.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office was among those who responded to an approximately 2:30 p.m. call that the man didn’t resurface after jumping with a friend from a bluff at Ike Kinswa State Park.

As deputies came to understand the incident had occurred around the noon hour, the search and rescue efforts began to wind down.

The friend, a 43-year-old man who lives in the Mossyrock area, said he went home and then called 911, though there was a significant time delay, Undersheriff Rob Snaza said.

His reason for waiting to call wasn’t clear at all, according to Snaza.

The Winlock man’s name has not been released.

Snaza said there are no plans to put a dive team in the water but they’ll talk today to decide how to proceed.

The lake is more than 100 feet deep in that area, he said.

“It’s hard to say when we’ll see something, because of the temperature of the water and how deep it is,” he said this morning.

Snaza said deputies came to learn the two men had been jumping from the Winston Creek side of the lake on the southern end earlier and decided to go to the cliff near the boat launch at Ike Kinswa, at the northwest corner of the lake. He said they had been drinking, Snaza said.

The Winlock man had never jumped from that spot, he said.

“The RP (reporting party) jumps in first, he’d done it there before, and he pops up and starts swimming to shore,” Snaza said. “Then he hears his buddy jump and doesn’t see his buddy pop up.”

He spent about an hour searching the lake bank for his friend and then went home, according to the sheriff’s office.

The cliff is described as 30 feet above the water.

Ike Kinswa is off state Route 122, which runs around the north side of the lake.

Ten firefighters from Salkum and Mossyrock responded to the afternoon call and scoured the banks for about an hour, according to Lewis County Fire District 8 Chief Duran McDaniel.

Both the sheriff’s office and the Mossyrock Fire Department launched their boats, with members of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office water rescue team responding as well.

Snaza said they finished their work on the water about 4:30 p.m., but deputies continued into the evening investigating and checking with the 51-year-old’s friends and family.

“We confirmed he was not at home,” Snaza said.

No formal search or recovery attempts are underway today, according to Snaza, but deputies, the state park ranger and the Mossyrock Fire Department will continue to check the area.

Deputies haven’t found anyone other than the Mossyrock man who witnessed the two jumping from the bluff, but concluded it happened between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., according to Snaza.

Snaza, a longtime sergeant with the sheriff’s office was promoted to undersheriff as of Monday, filling the vacancy created when Chief of Staff Steven Walton in July took a position as Lewis County budget administrator. Snaza is one of two individuals running for sheriff in November’s election.

Explosion, fire in Napavine injures one

A man was badly burned in Napavine this morning from an explosion and fire inside a camper in the driveway of a house.

Firefighters called just before 6 a.m. to the 200 block of West Branch Street found a male patient about 60 years old with burns to approximately 40 percent of his body, according to Lewis County Fire District 5.

The fire itself stayed inside the camper and was quickly extinguished, according to Firefighter-EMT Maria Kennedy. Neither the trees above it or the house which was only about 10 feet away caught fire, she said. The truck it was mounted upon even seemed undamaged, she said.

Kennedy, who was on the first arriving engine, said she didn’t yet know the cause.

“We believe a possible gas leak, but we put all our resources into patient care and had District 6 put the fire out,” she said. “The scary thing about burns, is your skin is your most important organ.”

Kennedy said she didn’t know if the man was visiting or lived there, or what he was doing inside the camper when it happened, but said residents at the home had gotten him to a safe part of the yard and were caring for him where crews arrived.

He was treated at the scene by medics and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, she said.
