CHEHALIS – Packwood Search and Rescue along with Cascade Dogs set out yesterday morning to locate a 50-year-old man who got separated from his friends the night before, out in the woods about 10 miles south of Randle.

The Olympia man had been mushroom picking in the area of Strawberry Mountain, and was supposed to meet his ride at dark, but didn’t, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities got a 911 called about 1:45 a.m. yesterday after the man’s friends and family failed to locate him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Search and rescue teams shortly after 7 a.m. began checking Forest Service Road 26, near milepost 5.5, Chief Dusty Breen said. The mushroom picker was found shortly before 9:15 a.m., Breen said, in the area of milepost 7.

He was cold and wet but otherwise in good condition, Breen said.

The man said he spent too much time picking and got caught in the dark. He built a campfire and then was located after hearing law enforcement using their sirens trying to get his attention, according to the sheriff’s office.

CHEHALIS – The second of three suspects in a Centralia home invasion in which a dog was fatally shot early last year was sentenced yesterday, and given a 10-year term.

Deandre J. Perry, of Portland, went before a judge in Lewis County Superior Court yesterday afternoon following a plea deal regarding his role in the incident at the 1200 block of Marion Street on Feb. 19, 2015.

He previously pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted robbery, first-degree burglary and two counts of second-degree assault.

The victim had a small number of medical marijuana plants growing inside his house and was preparing to watch a movie  with his girlfriend when strangers barged through the door, demanding money and weed and fired numerous shots.

Perry’s companion from Portland, Hennessy R. Turner-White, admitted to shooting the pit bull and was sentenced on Monday for the same offenses plus first-degree animal cruelty and got 12 years.

Centralia resident Brian A. Carreon is scheduled to be in court on Oct. 19, expected to plead guilty to his role and be sentenced.

Lewis County Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Brad Meagher said he’s confident a plea deal is in place as well for Carreon’s sister, Taina Duncan, from Portland, who allegedly drove the three males to the house.

CHEHALIS – Three people were hurt when an unloaded log truck struck the rear-end of a Toyota 4runner and then rolled striking another vehicle and nearly hitting a flagger on U.S. Highway 12 near Salkum today.

It happened in a construction zone where the westbound Toyota 4Runner and a Toyota RAV4 were stopped by a flagger for a lane closure, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The 2004 Kenworth truck and trailer was also westbound and was unable to stop in time, according to the state patrol. Troopers called just after noon today to milepost 79 report the log truck came to rest blocking the roadway in both directions.

Its driver, Kelly G. Moerke, 47, from Chehalis, was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital.

Also taken to the hospital were the other two drivers, Josee M. Naillon, 25, of Onalaska, and Cristen L. Boling, 37, of Silver Creek, according to the patrol. A 5-year-old girl riding in Boling’s RAV4 was reportedly uninjured.

The log truck and the Toyota RAV4 were both described as totaled.

The wreck is blamed on speeds too fast, following too closely and inattention, according to the investigating trooper.

The state patrol listed charges for Moerke of second-degree negligent driving and reckless endangerment of a highway worker.

CHEHALIS – Officers are increasing their presence in the area of W.F. West High School in Chehalis this morning following the discovery of a troubling comment made on social media.

The App called “After School” is a W.F. West High School site only accessible to their own students, who may post anonymously, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

A screens shot shown to police reads ““You all will be sorry tomorrow, every single person.”

Police department spokesperson Linda Bailey said after police learned of the posting via a 911 call about 7:50 p.m. yesterday, they contacted the school’s principal, who was already aware of it.

Investigators weren’t able to locate any posting referencing a shooting, according to Bailey.

The school is attended by ninth through 12th graders and is located at 342 S.W. 16th Street.

Police early this afternoon said another posting was made indicating the person only meant they were contemplating harming themselves, but officers couldn’t confirm the two posts were made by the same individual, according to Deputy Chief Randy Kaut.

CHEHALIS – Several shots were fired following an argument outside a Chehalis residence overnight, drawing officers from multiple agencies to the 600 block of Southwest William Avenue.

Nobody was struck or injured, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

Department spokesperson Linda Bailey reports the masked suspect fled the scene.

Officers responded to several 911 calls around 2:55 a.m. today, in which callers indicated hearing four or five shots, according to Bailey.

Chehalis police were joined by officers from the Centralia Police Department, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol. They set up containment in the area and brought in a police dog in an attempt to locate the suspect, according to Bailey.

The investigation is ongoing this morning and detectives are following up on several leads.

Bailey said this morning she has no information yet on where any bullets may have landed, but officers are at the scene now working on determining such information.

The police department believes it was not a random act, but that the residents of the home and the shooter are known to each other.

Initial information suggested the person with the gun as a male who left on foot, she said.

“They’re still interviewing to see if they can piece together a description,” she said.

CHEHALIS – A two-story home south of Chehalis sustained substantial damage from a fire yesterday evening, but the occupants were unhurt, according to Lewis County Fire District 5.

Crews were called about 7:30 p.m. to a report of a kitchen fire at the 300 block of North Prairie Road, about two miles east of Interstate 5 and just north of U.S. Highway 12.

They saw light smoke rising from the second story and immediately began extinguishing the fire, according to Firefighter Maria Kennedy.

They were assisted by members of Lewis County Fire Districts 6 and 15.

Kennedy said that because the family had kept the inside doors closed, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the kitchen and common area.

Arrangements were made for the residents to stay with nearby family, according to Kennedy.
