Thurston County sheriff’s deputies investigating a shooting last night found a marijuana grow operation with two guard alligators.

A dispute possibly regarding a failed drug transaction led to the shooting, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrested was Darren C. Shore, 41, from the Scott Lake area; his 30-year-old acquaintance was treated for two minor gunshot wounds and released from the hospital this morning, according to Lt. Greg Elwin.

The Olympian reports it occurred at the 12100 block of Champion Drive Southwest, near Scott Lake south of Olympia.

Shore said he fired in self defense, according to Elwin.

The sheriff’s office will work with animal services to determine the fate of the five-foot long alligators.

CHEHALIS – An autopsy conducted yesterday concluded the 69-year-old Winlock man who died after a two-vehicle accident in Evaline on Wednesday afternoon died from a previously undetected heart condition.

Larry Pudelko was traveling alone on Highway 603 near Schoolhouse Road when his Chevrolet Malibu crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming pickup truck, according to authorities.

Pudelko died en route to the hospital. A Lake Forest Park couple in the other vehicle suffered injuries that were not described as life threatening.

Lewis County Chief Deputy Coroner, Dawn Harris said yesterday Pudelko suffered a “dissecting aortic aneurysm”. It’s basically an undetected weakness in the vessel wall that can rupture at any time causing virtually instantaneous death, she said.

The manner of death will be labeled as natural as opposed to accidental, according to Harris.

Winds in Winlock this morning blew multiple trees over in the Frost Road Trailer Park damaging two homes.

Only one injury was reported; a man struck by a small branch, according to Lewis County Fire District 15.

“His injuries were minor, he declined to be transported, so we’re grateful for that,” Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Anderson said.

Anderson said gusts this morning of up to 43 mph were measured at the elementary school. The fire department has been hearing of lots of power lines and trees down, he said.

“It’s a mess,” Anderson said.

The park is on the east side of Interstate 5, on the 700 block of Frost Road.

Anderson said some of the trees down on Frost Road are quite large, and newly unprotected after property to the south was recently logged.

CHEHALIS – Weather forecasters say a strong wet front will stall over Southwest Washington through this evening, likely driving rivers such as the Chehalis River at Doty and the Newaukum River near Chehalis above flood stage.

Accumulations of rain from the weekend already has increased the risk of landslides in Western Washington and expected additional snow in the Cascades will present hazards on higher mountain roads, according to the National Weather Service.

Lewis County Deputy Director of the Department of Emergency Management Sgt. Ross McDowell says local weather watchers in Pe Ell reported a weekend total of 5.5 inches. Chehalis is reporting 3 inches, McDowell noted.

Two to five inches of additional rain is expected, the weather service indicated this morning.

Official caution that excessive run off will cause ponding of water in urban areas, highways and in poor drainage areas.

The snow level will be around 4,000 feet today, rising to 5,000 feet tonight.

The weather service recommends folks be alert for rapid changes by listening to their weather radios or monitoring local news media.
