No survivors on Chehalis Cessna

No survivors were found with the wreckage of the Chehalis-based plane found this morning northeast of Morton, the the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office is reporting.

It appears the Cessna 340 from Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute disintegrated upon impact, according to Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown.

Brown reported just after 1 p.m. today that the sheriff’s office, the Lewis County Coroner’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating.

CHEVY CAN’T ROLL THAT WAY

• Somebody removed all four fancy tires and wheels from a Chevrolet Impala parked outside an auto shop on the 2100 block of North National Avenue in Chehalis, according to a report made to police yesterday morning.

MALL SHOPLIFTING

• Surveillance cameras captured a shoplifting incident at a business on the 1300 block of Lum Road in Centralia yesterday evening, according to the Centralia Police Department. Two females left before police arrived but the investigation is ongoing. Twice last week police were called to the Outlet Mall; once on Saturday to the Coach Outlet, a high-end handbag shop, when a purse valued at $200 was stolen and two days before that when a female stole a number of the expensive purses and fled in a white mini van.

PILLS IN POCKET LEAD TO ARREST

• A 25-year-old Rochester resident was arrested after a traffic stop in Chehalis yesterday when police found suspected prescription drugs in a container, but not in a pill bottle with his name on it, in his pocket, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Mathew R. Takacs was driving with a suspended license when he was pulled over about 1:30 p.m. on Northeast Kresky Avenue, according to police. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail for possession of a controlled substance.

VAN MISSES DEBRIS BUT HITS CONCRETE BARRIER

• Two passengers were injured when a van ran into the inside concrete barrier on Interstate 5 in Chehalis yesterday afternoon. A trooper called about 3:25 p.m. to the northbound lanes near Chamber of Commerce Way reported the driver was traveling too fast when swerved to avoid debris in the road and lost control of the vehicle. The damage to the 1991 Ford van was limited to about $1,000 and the driver, Jacob N. Petty, 22, of Rochester was reportedly uninjured according to the Washington State Patrol. Passenger Corey J. Hickman, 25, of Chehalis, was taken to Providence Centralia Hospital with an ankle injury, according to the state patrol. A 22-year-old passenger from Tumwater had minor injuries but declined to go the hospital, the state patrol reported.

STOLEN VEHICLE

• Centralia police took a report last night of a car stolen from North Tower Avenue and East Main Street. The victim said he left it in a parking lot with a “for sale” sign on it overnight, according to the Centralia Police Department. The victim learned from Olympia police the car’s license plate was left at the scene of a hit and run accident, Centralia police reported.

BREAK-IN AT CHEHALIS CHURCH

• Chehalis police were called to a church on the 100 block of Prindle Street on Tuesday morning about a theft that had occurred overnight. The door was discovered open and a computer was missing, according to detective Sgt. Rick McNamara.

PARTS LIFTED FROM VEHICLE AT CAR LOT

• Somebody stole a radiator right out of a truck at a car lot in Rochester, a loss of $450, not counting the $850 damage to the vehicle, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office reported today. It happened at JMJ Auto on the 10,100 block of U.S. Highway 12 sometime between 9 p.m. on Tuesday and the next day, according to the sheriff’s office. It was a 1990 Chevrolet truck.

BEER RUN HALTED

• Centralia police were called after a pair of females attempted to roll a shopping art full of beer out the door at the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue about 8 p.m. yesterday. They were stopped by an employee but subsequently fled in a car, according to  the Centralia Police Department. One of the females was identified on a video and will be receiving a summons to court, police reported.

JAILED FOR SHOPLIFTING

• A man who had previously been “trespassed” from a business on the 600 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia was arrested early yesterday morning for second-degree burglary after he went there and was reportedly caught trying to steal something, according to the Centralia Police Department. Ronald R. Meeks, 56, of Centralia, was booked into the Lewis County Jail.

RETIREMENT HOME WORKER ARRESTED FOR THEFT

• An employee of Chehalis West Assisted Living was arrested on Tuesday for third-degree theft, for allegedly taking $20 from a resident. Drasilla M. Ocamb, 34, of Chehalis, was arrested and released, according to detective Sgt. Rick McNamara. Police were called again yesterday to the retirement center on Northwest Quincy Place about a a resident who was missing numerous rings.

NO LEADS IN RABBIT’S DEATH

• Chehalis police were called to Southwest 11th Street Monday after a resident discovered their pet rabbit dead. Its cage was unlatched and other than an apparent  broken toe, the animal had no visible injuries, according to police. Detective Sgt. Rick McNamara said the individual suspected someone killed the animal but police have no leads and no suspects.

THEFT AND VANDALISM

• Chehalis police were called to a car prowl on Northwest St. Helens Avenue about 5 p.m. on Monday.

• Centralia police took a report of the theft of a flag from a building on the 1000 block of West First Street on Monday afternoon.

• Centralia police were called about someone tearing down a sign to a business on the 700 block of North Tower Avenue on Monday morning.

DRUG ARREST

• Centralia police arrested a Rochester man yesterday for delivery of a controlled substance. Joseph E. Beck, 43, was booked into the Lewis County Jail for that offense and a warrant after contact with an officer about noontime on the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue.

BROKEN BONES LEAD TO ASSAULT ARREST

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday they arrested a 21-year-old Toledo man for second-degree assault following an investigation into a previous incident in which a 23-year-old man suffered a broken pelvis after he was thrown off the deck of of a Fluckinger Road home about seven feet onto concrete. Cody L. Salzer, 21, was booked into the Lewis County Jail last Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office. Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said Salzer told a deputy he didn’t recall assaulting anyone as he had been too intoxicated but friends told him about it the next day.

NO ROBBERY AT MALL

• Chehalis police said on Tuesday they concluded a reported armed robbery at the Lewis County Mall over the weekend did not happen in Chehalis. The case was handed over to the Lewis County Sheriff’s office as it apparently occurred in the county, according to detective Sgt. Rick McNamara.

CAR LANDS 50 FEET OFF ROAD

• One person was hospitalized after a single-vehicle wreck at Highway 603 and Kaul Road northwest of Napavine on Tuesday night. Responders to he 7:30 p.m. call found the vehicle about 50 feet off the road, according to Lewis County Fire District 5.

ROBBERY INVESTIGATION

• Chehalis police are investigating a Saturday night report of an armed robbery at the Lewis County Mall on Northeast Hampe Way. Chehalis Police Department detective Sgt. Rick McNamara said this morning officers are still sorting through the details, some of which are different from the original report made by a Chehalis man.

FAKE CHECKS

• Police are investigating the use of a counterfeit check to purchase items from a Centralia store. An officer was called to the 1300 block of Lum Road yesterday and police have learned the identities of the two female suspects, according to the  Centralia Police Department. On Saturday afternoon, an officer was called to the same area about two females from Seattle purchasing items with counterfeit checks. It’s not clear from police summaries of the incidents if they are related.

AUTO THEFT

• Chehalis police were called about 11 a.m. on Saturday to Southwest Grandview Avenue about a vehicle theft.

CAR PROWLS

• Centralia police were called about 9:40 a.m. on Sunday to the 1000 block of Eckerson Road about the theft of a small toolbox from the back of an unlocked pickup truck overnight.

• Police were called about 8 a.m. on Saturday to the 900 block of South Schueber Road where somebody had broke a window in a vehicle in the parking lot. Nothing seemed to be missing, according to the  Centralia Police Department. At about 2 a.m., an officer had been called to the same area where somebody broke a vehicle’s window and something, unspecified, was stolen.

• Chehalis police were called on Saturday about two vehicles being prowled on Southwest Thomsen Avenue. Shortly after, an officer was called about car prowls on Southwest Grandview Avenue. Another car prowl was reported on Southwest Fourth Street.

BURGLARY AND THEFT

• Somebody cut 50 fence posts off at their base and made off with them and other items from an undeveloped portion of property outside Tenino, according to a report made to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. The theft happened sometime between Oct. 6 and Oct. 14 at the 14,400 block of McDuff Road Southeast, according to sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy. Also taken was a 100-foot roll of field fencing, a John Deere riding lawnmower with antlers mounted on the front and a small-sized Suzuki Quad-runner, according to mealy. The loss is estimated at more than $7,000, he said.

• A storage container in Grand Mound was burglarized sometime between 8 p.m. last Tuesday and 6 o’clock the following morning, according to  the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. The victim, a representative of Harbor Pacific Construction, said the items missing from the container on 201st Avenue and Old Highway 99 Southwest included a $500 Stihl gas axe construction saw, brass pipe fittings and an orange headlamp.

• Chehalis police were called about a burglary to a building on South Market Boulevard on Saturday morning.

• Chehalis police were called on Saturday to Southwest Thomsen Avenue about a shed being broken into.

FOUND DRUGS

• Centralia police were arresting a man for an outstanding warrant overnight and found suspected methamphetamine when they searched him, based on “furtive movements”, according to the Centralia Police Department. Scott R. Hotchkiss, 31, of Centralia, was booked in to the Lewis County Jail for possession of methamphetamine following his contact with an officer about 12:25 a.m. at North Tower Avenue and East Third Street, according to police.

SCHOOL FIGHT AND THREATS OF RETALIATION LEADS TO DAY OFF FOR ALL TOLEDO STUDENTS

• Three Toledo High School students are on emergency expulsion after they allegedly went to the middle school yesterday and assaulted a student there. The arrest of the boys and ensuing rumor mill through texting and Facebook prompted authorities to cancel classes today district wide. Toledo School District Superintendent Sharon Bower said as police and the schools are sorting through the incident, she closed down the high school, middle school, elementary school and alternative school for the day. “The kids are saying a lot of things we don’t think are true, so we wanted to squelch that,” Bower said this morning. “I just didn’t think it was a good place for kids to be today.” Later today, Police Chief John Brockmueller reported the rumors included ambiguous threats of possible retaliation at the middle school. Brockmueller said police were called yesterday morning to the middle school on Fifth Street. Brockmueller said he arrested the three boys for misdemeanor assault. The victim was a middle school boy, he said. The suspects were released to their parents and the case was being referred for possible charges, he said this morning. Later today, the police chief said in a news release the trio was booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center. They included a 14-year-old for misdemeanor assault, and a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old for criminal conspiracy. Bower said it happened inside the school but “they really didn’t get to carry through” as staff intervened right away. Bower said they really don’t have fights at their schools. The closure follows several days last week when students were off at the middle and elementary schools because a water main break left them without water.

ROLLOVER CRASH SENDS TWO TO HOSPITALS

• A woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a rollover accident last night on Interstate 5 at the exit 68 interchange. Firefighters and medics called about 10:45 p.m. to the northbound lanes at Avery Road and U.S. Highway 12 found the car in a ditch, according to Lewis County Fire District 5. Both airbags deployed and the car, with Oregon license plates, appeared destroyed, according to Firefighter Brad Bozarth. An adult male was taken to Providence Centralia Hospital for possible internal injuries, Bozarth said.

ALLEGED DISPLAY OF KNIFE LEADS TO ARREST

• Chehalis police arrested an individual for second-degree assault domestic violence after being called about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday to an apartment on the 900 block of South Market Boulevard. Deputy Police Chief Randy Kaut said a 19-year-old woman had reportedly picked up a knife during a dispute with a 30-year-old man who also lives there. Nobody was injured and she did not have a knife when officers arrived, he said. The woman has not been charged, pending further investigation.

THEFT, THEFT, MORE THEFT

• Centralia police say a witness got a license plate number after a female stole purses totaling more than $1,000 from the 1300 block of Lum Road and fled in a white mini van yesterday evening. Police were called about the theft about 6:40 p.m. and continue to investigate.

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported yesterday they investigated a residential burglary on the 1500 block of South Schueber Road in which an estimated $100,000 of jewelry was stolen. Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said a deputy was called about the incident on Oct. 7. Taken from the male victim was a large quantity of necklaces, ear rings, bracelets and watches, according to Brown.

• Centralia police took a report of a burglary to an office building on the 500 block of West Main Street at about 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday.

• Deputies responding to a burglary alarm about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday at the 100 block of Stearns Road outside Chehalis found a back door pried open but nothing missing. The sheriff’s office speculated the intruder must have been scared off by the alarm.

• An X-Box game and controller were missing after a burglary on the 1600 block of Windsor Avenue in Centralia reported on Tuesday afternoon to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. it happened sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. that morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

• Centralia police were called about 3:45 p.m. yesterday about the theft of a purse from a car at the 200 block of North Tower Avenue in Centralia. A summary of the incident from the police department notes a suspect was seen going through the purse at the train station but fled on foot before an officer arrived.

• Somebody stole the front-end cover off a vehicle on the 1700 block of Military Road in Centralia, according to a report made to police about 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

• Centralia police took a report of a vehicle prowl with damage done to the vehicle on the 300 block of West Pine Street at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

• The sheriff’s office is reminding the public not to leave valuables in plain sight inside parked vehicles after yet another car prowl at the rails to trails parking area outside Chehalis at the 200 block of Highway 603. A Chehalis man returned to his truck Monday afternoon to find somebody had broken a window and removed two hunting knives, according to Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown.

SMOKED UP FEED PLANT

• Firefighters from Chehalis and Centralia were called to a possible fire at the chicken feed plant on the 500 block of West Main Street in Chehalis at about 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday. They found a ball bearing had overheated and filled the plant with smoke, according to Chehalis Capt. Casey Beck.

TOLEDO HOME SAVED FROM FIRE THAT BURNED GARGE TO THE GROUND

• A blaze yesterday morning in Toledo destroyed a detached garage but a nearby house sustained only minimal damage. Firefighters from Lewis County Fire District 2 were called about 9 a.m. to the 100 block of Cooper Road off state Route 505. “We went right to the house, the garage was already on the ground and the back side of the house had already started to burn,” Fire Lt. Tracy Summers said. The residents were not home at the time. Firefighters from Winlock and Vader assisted. A lot of tools and motor parts were lost, according to Fire Investigator Jay Birley. He said this morning he doesn’t yet know what caused the fire.

GRAFFITI IN CENTRALIA

• Centralia police yesterday took two reports of spray-painted graffiti on the outsides of buildings. One was on the 100 block of West First Street and the other on the 200 block of South Pearl Street. Centralia police Sgt. Stacy Denham said one of them contained the word “Sensa.” Denham said he is not sure what was meant by it, but said it is a martial arts term for a teacher or boss.

THEFTS AND BREAK-INS

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported yesterday somebody stole more than $6,000 of items from a storage shed on the 400 block of Conrad Road in Winlock. A deputy took a report Saturday evening and learned that among the items missing were a power tools, a Kawasaki motorcycle, televisions, a floor jack and a propane tank. Damage done to wiring, gas lines and a sewer hose totaled an estimated $1,800, according to the report. The victim lives out of town and the break-in apparently occurred in previous weeks.

• A deputy took a report on Saturday about a break-in to a shop on the 700 block of Gish Road in Onalaska. Among the items stolen were a miter saw, a Stihl chainsaw and five sets of drive sockets, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. it had occurred sometime in the previous two to three weeks.

• Somebody broke the window of a Honda Civic and left the glove box open after it was left broken down Sunday evening on the side of the road near Old Highway 99 and the Oregon Trail Road, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. The Chehalis woman who owns the car had removed the stereo and put it in the trunk, and nothing was missing, the sheriff’s office reported.

POLICE CHIEF BERG TEACHES, LEARNS ABOUT NEW TECHNOLOGY

• Centralia Police Chief Bob Berg was among some 30 law enforcement officers who attended a rural law enforcement technology institute last week, an event held in Coronado, Calif. which Berg called innovative and informative. Among the topics of discussion were crime mapping, records management, communications, and technologies related to patrol vehicles, aviation and digital video, according to a news release yesterday. Participation was funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs National Institute of Justice, according to the news release. Berg was a presenter as well, speaking about implementing electronic ticketing. Berg noted the most beneficial aspect was the interaction with his contemporaries. “I found that other departments are facing the same issues that we encounter and that there are some good solutions out there that are reasonable in cost,” Berg said in the news release. “Moreover, it reinforced my belief that the Centralia Police Department is in the forefront of implementing and using new technology for law enforcement.”

TOLEDO COUPLE FINDS THEIR HOUSE TRASHED

• A pair of Toledo residents returned home Saturday evening to find someone had dumped paint throughout their house on the walls, floors and furniture, as well as left writing with a black permanent marker in various places including the walls and appliances. The damage, which added up to an estimated $50,000, also included three televisions – one which was struck by a hammer – several broken windows and bleach and vinegar poured around the home, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Somebody also fired a shot through a window, Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said this morning. It happened on the 500 block of state Route 506 sometime between Friday and Saturday evening, Brown said. The suspect, the 38-year-old daughter of one of the residents, was interviewed in the Pacific County Jail and admitted the damage, Brown said. She was not arrested, but the case was referred to the prosecutor’s office for charges of first-degree malicious mischief and theft of a firearm, according to Brown.

UNRULY ARRESTEES

• Centralia police booked a 29-year-old Rochester man into jail Saturday afternoon after he reportedly kicked out the rear window of a patrol car. Ryan A. McCarter, of Rochester, was arrested for second-degree malicious mischief. It followed a contact with an officer about 4 p.m. on the 700 block of West Cherry Street. Why he was put in the patrol car was not reported by police.

• A wanted man found hiding in a closet was uncooperative and damaged a patrol car when he banged his head against the side window and plastic divider early Saturday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responding to a tip on the whereabouts of John T. Malantich went to a residence on the 200 block of Newaukum Valley Road in Chehalis about 5 a.m. Saturday to arrest him for a warrant, according to the sheriff’s office.

OUT-OF-TOWNERS MAKE GETAWAY INTO DEAD END

• While Chehalis police take reports virtually every day of shoplifting, most often from Wal-Mart, a trio of individuals made their job a little easier on Saturday afternoon by fleeing north in their vehicle towards Home Depot and to the car dealership where the road dead-ends. Officers were called about 3:35 p.m. by a witness who saw two men run out of the store and hop into a waiting van, according to police. As police were responding, the van, being followed by a witness, got turned around and was stopped just beyond the northbound entrance to Interstate 5 at Chamber of Commerce Way, detective Sgt. Rick McNamara said. Police recovered two DVD players. The three were arrested for third-degree theft, a misdemeanor, and then released. They are Calvert R. Anderson, 27, of Lacey; Nicole D. Haas, 21, of Lacey; and Jeffrey A. Bennett, 30, of Tumwater, McNamara said.

PAIR PUNCHED BY PASSING STRANGERS

• Another type of call that keeps Centralia and Chehalis police fairly busy is misdemeanor assault, however, the assailants are not usually strangers, and it most commonly involves bar fights on the weekends, according to detective Sgt. Rick McNamara. However, an officer was called about 2:20 a.m. on Saturday to the 400 block of North Market Boulevard in Chehalis after a male reported two males walking by punched him and his friend in the head. The two subjects were not found, McNamara said.

10-YEAR-OLD GIRL LOCKED UP FOR ALLEGED ASSAULT

• Centralia police arrested a 10-year-old girl for felony assault on Saturday afternoon. A summary of the incident from the Centralia Police Department does not make note of the type of alleged assault, but the girl was taken to the Lewis County juvenile detention facility following contact with an officer about 3 p.m. on the 1100 block of Scammon Creek Road, according to police. Centralia police Sgt. Stacy Denham later said the child was angry at her mother’s boyfriend and when the mother returned home and began to deal with the issue, the girl threw a jar at her mother, which missed but struck her younger brother in the head. He had to get stitches, Denham said. The girl was arrested for second-degree assault. Denham said children between the ages of zero and eight are incapable of committing a crime in the eyes of the courts, and those 8 to 12 years old are presumed incapable as well, but sometimes can be found through a lengthy process as knowledgeable and mature enough to be charged with a crime.

DRUGS

• Gary L. Lohr, 64, of Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail overnight for possession of methamphetamine, according to the Centralia Police Department. The arrest followed a contact just before 3 a.m. near the 2400 block of North Pearl Street.

• Police took a report of the theft of prescription medications from a residence on the 2900 block of Mount Vista Road on Friday afternoon. Just before 3 o’clock the following morning, an officer took another report of the theft of medication – and a cell phone – from an address on the 1100 block of West Chestnut Street.

CAMPAIGN SIGN THEFT

• Chehalis police were called Friday afternoon and told all of an individual’s campaign signs were missing from Northeast Kresky Avenue. Lewis County Assessor Dianne Dorey’s signs seemed to have vanished from elsewhere in town as well as from Centralia and around the county, according to the report.

LOG TRUCK LOSES LOAD ON BRIDGE

• Nobody was injured but a Honda Civic ran into a log on the roadway after a Centralia truck truck driver spilled his load of logs on U.S. Highway 101 north of Humptulips in Grays Harbor County on Friday, according to the Washington State Patrol. William E. Mattox, 50, was southbound and attempting to pass another vehicle when he overcorrected and lost his pup trailer and logs on the Humptulips Bridge, according to the state patrol. It happened just before 6 a.m. He was cited for driving too fast, the patrol reported. The Honda, being driven by a 21-year-old woman, was totaled.
