DOG TREATS AS WEAPON

• A 35-year-old Centralia woman was jailed after she reportedly threw a jar of dog treats at her boyfriend’s head during an argument. Police responding about 4:20 p.m. on Friday to the 500 block of South Diamond Street arrested Cristy L. Smiley for fourth-degree assault and booked her into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

OFFICER SPIT AT

• A 16-year-old boy was booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center overnight after an incident at the 1000 block of Belmont Avenue in Centralia. Police responding about 1:40 a.m. today say the teen spit on an officer, according to the Centralia Police Department. He faces possible charges of third-degree assault as well as resisting arrest and being a minor in possession of alcohol, according to police.

THEFT

• Centralia police were called about 10:40 a.m. yesterday to the 1800 block of Taylor Street regarding the theft of money from a garage sale.

FRAUD

• Centralia police took a report on Friday afternoon from the 600 block of Bengal Court about checks which had been stolen and are now being used.

SEX CRIME ALLEGED

• A 22-year-old Chehalis resident was arrested in Oregon on Friday for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl, a friend of his sister’s. Oregon State Police say Shane A. Ware was staying with relatives in Josephine County, and in March was texting with the girl, made arrangements to pick her up in Grants Pass, bought alcohol for her and later had unlawful sexual contact with her. He was booked into the Josephine County Jail for second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse and furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to Oregon State Police.

ELECTRICAL FIRE IN CHEHALIS

• Fire broke out inside an exterior wall in a Chehalis house yesterday, but someone was home and helped keep it in check until the fire department arrived. Firefighters called just after 11 a.m. to the 1400 block of Southwest Johnson Street learned the man was heading out through the back porch when he smelled smoke and then saw flames on the outside of the rental home. “He and his girlfriend tried to put it out with buckets of water, and then went next door and grabbed a hose,” Chehalis Fire Department Capt. Ted McCarty said. It was an older home with the old knot and tube wiring, McCarty said. He expects that had something to do with it, he said.

WINLOCK FIRE A MYSTERY

• Fire Investigator Ted McCarty said he could not find a cause for the fire on Thursday evening that destroyed an old detached garage and a larger outbuilding on Anterim Road next to Interstate 5 north of Winlock. “It’s a mystery,” he said. “I couldn’t find anything as to why it started.” Firefighters from four departments responded to the calls that came in just after 7 p.m., many of them from passing motorists. The 29-year-old resident had a car that didn’t run parked inside which burned and lost other belongings stored there, according to McCarty. There was an extension cord he used for power, which he would plug in at the house when he needed light out there, McCarty said. But it was unplugged.

BREAK-IN ONALASKA

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported this morning someone forced open a back door to get into a home on the 2800 block of Centralia-Alpha Road in Onalaska and stole valuables belonging to the 63-year-old resident. The report made on Wednesday indicated it happened sometime since April 19, according to the sheriff’s office. The victim will be compiling a list of what is missing, Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said.

THEFT TOLEDO

• Someone stole an 18-foot long flatbed car-hauling trailer and a 2006 John Deere riding lawnmower from the 2300 block of state Route 505 near Toledo. The 50-year-old victim who reported it yesterday said he had them parked beside his shop, and they disappeared sometime between 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office. The loss is estimated at $6,500.

WIRING STOLEN

• A deputy took a report yesterday afternoon of copper wire stolen from an outbuilding on property at the 2900 block of Sawall Avenue in Centralia. It was taken sometime between 3 p.m. on Wednesday and 12:30 p.m. yesterday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

FRAUD INVESTIGATION

• A 56-year-old Vader woman reported yesterday she received a late notice in the mail for a student loan that someone else took out in her name, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The loan was from 2010 for a student at Lower Columbia Community College and the case is under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

RUNAWAY DRIVER FOUND, BOOKED FOR WARRANT

• A chase began with Chehalis Tribal Police yesterday and ended in a crash near U.S. Highway 12 in Malone resulted in the later arrest of a 31-year-old Lacey man wanted for outstanding warrants, according to the  Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle was occupied by an 18-year-old Oakville woman and a 24-year-old Tacoma man; he was arrested for providing a false identity to law enforcement officers. The car will be searched today, according to Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate.

AUTO THEFT

• A light blue 1994 Honda Accord vanished from the parking lot at the Twin City Town Center yesterday, even though it had been locked and the victim had the keys. An officer called about 5:50 p.m. to the area near the Pet Sense store was told by its driver she parked it there in the morning at the beginning of her shift, according to the Chehalis Police Department.  A 2000 Honda stolen from Longview turned up in front of the same business, brought to the attention of an officer at about 9:40 p.m., according to police. It’s owner arrived and took it home, police department spokesperson Linda Bailey said. Bailey said she didn’t have any information if the two incident might be related. The missing car has a license plate of AEP 5984, she said.

CAR PROWL

• Centralia were called about 10:40 p.m. yesterday regarding two inflatable rafts stolen from the bed of a pickup truck while their owner was inside a business on the 900 block of Harrison Avenue.

• Someone stole a small amount of change from a vehicle at the 600 block of North Pearl Street in Centralia during the night, according to a report made to police yesterday morning.

ASSAULT REPORT

• Centralia police took a report yesterday from an individual about an assault that reportedly occurred two weeks earlier.

FAKE BILL

• Chehalis police were contacted yesterday after an individual tried to deposit a $20 bill at the bank they had received from a local business and learned it was counterfeit.

WRECK

• A 2005 Mini Cooper was totaled and a 61-year-old Chehalis woman ended up with facial injuries when a Jeep Cherokee ran a stop sign at Bishop and Rush roads south of Chehalis just after 7 a.m. yesterday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The 35-year-old Chehalis resident driving the Jeep was cited for second-degree negligent driving and not having insurance, according to the sheriff’s office. His vehicle sustained only minor damage, Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said.

STRUCTURE FIRES

• Two outbuildings next to Interstate 5 near Winlock went up in flames last night, but nobody was hurt and the primary loss was an inoperable car. Firefighters from four departments responded to the calls that came in just after 7 p.m., many of them from passing motorists, according to Lewis County Fire District 15. “The first engine in saw a garage-type building fully involved in flames, and it had spread to other building,” Chief Russ Larson said. The second structure was a larger, older possibly former poultry house, but both had cedar shake roofs, according to Larson. “So they went up real fast,” he said. The fire was knocked down before it migrated through the brush to the freeway or spread to the adjacent house. The property sits on Anterim Road, about a mile south of the U.S. Highway 12 and Avery Road interchange. Larson said he had no idea what caused it. Twenty-nine-year-old Elliot Dodrill said he and his friend were inside playing Xbox and had no idea what was going on until fire engines came rolling up the driveway. A fire investigator went out and was to return this morning.

• Two cats were rescued but two others perished in a fire that destroyed a two-story home southwest of Littlerock on Wednesday. Eight fire departments responded to the 4:30 p.m. blaze along the 7600 block of Bordeaux Road Southwest, according to West Thurston Regional Fire Authority. The owner was just arriving home from work and and tried to clear cats from inside but the residence was filled with hot smoke and flames were taking over, spokesperson Lt. Lanette Dyer said. Nobody was injured but the family’s house and its contents are a total loss, she said. The cause is being investigated.

FOULED PROWL

• Centralia police were called about 4:20 a.m. today when a subject was seen breaking a vehicle’s window and stealing a backpack along the 400 block of North Tower Avenue. Officers responded but were unable to locate a suspect, according to the Centralia Police Department. Police were told that once the male realized he’d been observed, he dropped the pack and ran away, according to police. He was wearing a blue and yellow coat, police said.

AUTO THEFT

• Chehalis police responded about 5:45 a.m. today when a 19-year-old Chehalis woman discovered her red 1991 Honda Civic missing from in front of her home on the 300 block of Northeast Adams Avenue. She had last seen it about 10 p.m. the night before and she had the keys, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Officers followed some leads and subsequently the car was spotted at a location which Olympia police were asked to check, according to police. The car was recovered, department spokesperson Linda Bailey said.

• Centralia police were called about 10:15 a.m. yesterday about a car stolen during the night from the 100 block of South Tower Avenue. The 2008 Ford Focus turned up by about 1:15 p.m. parked at the 2900 block of Little Hanaford Road but it has been burned up, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Few details were available about what happened, but it’s possible someone just needed a vehicle for a short period of time and when they were done, set it on fire, maybe in an attempt to destroy any evidence, according to Cmdr. Steve Aust. “It’s actually more common than you would think,” Aust said.

BURGLARY

• Sometime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. yesterday, someone broke into a home on the 200 block of Leonard Road near Onalaska and stole $200 worth of jewelry and cash, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

• A deputy was called yesterday afternoon about a theft of items from a barn on the 400 block of Butts Road near Morton. Among the goods stolen were an Alpine car stereo and a gray tool box with hand tools, It happened sometime after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

FEDS STUMBLE UPON DOMESTIC VIOLATION

• The FBI was in Chehalis yesterday for unknown reasons involving what the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office called an active investigation. Sheriff’s Cmdr. Steve Aust said a detective accompanied them, but that he could not speak for the federal agents, as it is their case. While in the area of the 400 block of Southwest 14th Street about 10:45 a.m. however, an agent called 911 to report hearing a female in distress from the bushes. Chehalis police arrived and learned Tyler A. Ketchum, 19, of Puyallup, pushed the 15-year-old and then attempted to flee, but was detained, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Ketchum was arrested for a violation of a no-contact order and booked into the Lewis County Jail, department spokesperson Linda Bailey said. The incident was unrelated to the FBI’s case, Bailey said. A call seeking information from the FBI has not yet been returned.

ARMED AND ANGRY MASKED MAN ALARMS RANDLE

• A 25-year-old man looking for his wife was arrested after a rampage in Randle last night that ended near the Nazarene Church where he was reportedly outfitted with a caged baseball mask and beating on the building with a bat, frightening the neighborhood. Deputies who were called about 6 p.m. learned that before he arrived at the church he had been at a nearby home on the 200 block of Silverbrook Road armed with 10-inch long wooden-handled kitchen knife demanding to be let inside. A 15-year-old girl there said he was stabbing the house and when she did not open the door, he left, kicking the family cat as he departed, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Charles M. Aalmo reportedly fled as he saw deputies arriving, scaling a wooden fence which knocked a section of it over and was subsequently taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office. Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said Aalmo and his wife had earlier had an argument, although she didn’t say what it was about. Aalmo was wanted by his probation officer and was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for numerous offenses such as disorderly conduct, malicious mischief and unlawful display of a weapon, Brown said. Among the damage was a shattered electrical box on the side of the church building, according to Brown.

BROOM WIELDING WOMAN QUESTIONED IN BURGLARY

• Police were called about 11:30 p.m. yesterday to an apartment in Chehalis where a 22-year-old man he said he awoke to a loud bang from his living room area and then a woman standing in the doorway of his bedroom, holding a broomstick and screaming at him. He said he was acquainted with the intruder, who wanted to know where his girlfriend was and that she left the residence at the 300 block of Southwest Third Street with a bag of his girlfriend’s belongings, telling him she could get it back when she came and talked to her, according to the Chehalis Police Department. An officer subsequently spoke with the 29-year-old who said the bag was hers and that she had been let in through the front door, according to police. The resident said the door had been locked, and it appeared she came in through a window, police said. The owner of the bag said it contained valuables such as her cell phone, wallet, social security card and birth certificate, police said. The case is under investigation.

POLICE: WOMEN SHOPLIFT WEED EATER

• A pair of Rochester women were arrested yesterday after they allegedly entered a Centralia power tool shop on the 3800 block of Harrison Avenue along with a child and left with a weed eater. They and a third woman in the car were stopped by Centralia police and subsequently arrested for third-degree theft and possession of stolen property, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Booked into the Lewis County Jail were Nancy Martinez-Arellano, 23, and Rosalia Martinez-Arellano, 31, according to the sheriff’s office. Their Ford Focus was impounded and a deputy was to seek a warrant to search it, Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said.

OTHER THEFT

• Centralia police took a report about 10:20 a.m. yesterday of a car dolly stolen during the night from the 1000 block of South Gold Street.

• Chehalis police were called yesterday evening about a car prowl at Shop ‘n Kart on the 2100 block of North National Avenue.

VANDALISM

• Centralia police were called just before 6 a.m. today regarding someone having spray painted the hood of a vehicle at the 800 block of F Street.

MINERAL DEATH

• The Lewis County coroner said today he found no injuries or signs of foul play involved with the man who died in Mineral early Monday. Deputies were called to a campsite when friends of a 36-year-old Gary Jerome of Hoquiam man tried to wake him up but found he was dead. Coroner Warren McLeod said the cause and manner of death can’t be determined until he gets the results of toxicology tests.

ACCIDENT IN THE WOODS SEND ONE TO HOSPITAL

• A man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a logging accident near Pe Ell this morning. Firefighters were called just before 8 a.m. the the area about 15 miles into the woods off Muller Road, according to Lewis County Fire District 11. The initial report was a possible broken leg but paramedics with AMR wanted him airlifted, Fire Chief Michael Krafczyk said. Krafczyk was not on the call but said he understood the Weyerhaeuser worker is a 49-year-old. He praised the man’s co-workers who used their extra  medical emergency equipment to get the patient back-boarded and ready for transport. One of the loggers is also a firefighter from Winlock, he said. “They have that extra equipment because they’re at logging sites,” he said.

DEATH IN MINERAL UNDER INVESTIGATION

• Deputies were called just before 10 o’clock yesterday morning to a campsite in Mineral when friends of a 36-year-old Hoquiam man tried to wake him up but found he was dead. They had come up the night before to stay over and go fishing, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy was told he had been drinking hard liquor and beer the night before, Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said. The coroner responded to the location, along the 200 block of Mineral Road South behind the old Mineral School, and will be conducting an investigation, Brown said.

CAR SHOT UP

• Someone shot out the rear window of a vehicle at the 200 block of Centralia College Boulevard in Centralia, according to a report made to police about 2:30 p.m. yesterday.The Centralia Police Department this morning indicated they are investigating.

GUNS SPIRITED OUT OF HOME

• A 58-year-old Toledo man reported yesterday that someone came through his unlocked sliding glass door and stole more than $1,400 worth of firearms the day before. A deputy responding to yesterday’s report from the 400 block of Jackson Highway South was told it happened sometime between 8:45 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Missing are a Savage 20-gauge shotgun, a Sears 12-gauge shotgun, a Mossberg rifle and a Smith and Wesson 9 mm pistol, according to the sheriff’s office.

BARN BURGLED

• Someone took a battery charger from a barn on the 1300 block of Bunker Creek Road west of Chehalis, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The theft was reported yesterday but happened on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.

BEER HEIST

• Morton police reported yesterday they are continuing to investigate a burglary at a Mossyrock business last week in which someone stole several cases of beer and approximately $200 cash. The victim told an officer the break-in at the 100 block of East State Street occurred sometime 9 p.m. last Tuesday and 10 o’clock the following morning, according to the Morton Police Department.

VEHICLE PROWL

• Chehalis police took a report yesterday morning of various items stolen from a vehicle on South Grandview Drive.

• A vehicle prowl was reported Sunday afternoon in Chehalis along Southwest Gails Avenue, a prowl on Saturday afternoon on Southwest 19th Street, and on Friday along South Market Boulevard.

DRUGS

• A 62-year-old Mineral man was arrested for possession of methamphetamine yesterday evening after a pipe was found in his coat pocket, with a heavy residue of the the suspected drug. Richard A. Jacobi was pulled over about 7 p.m. on the 500 block of Mineral Creek Road in Mineral, reportedly driving on a suspended license, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Jacobi was booked into the Lewis County Jail but will be released with no charges filed pending further investigation.

BOLD CAR PROWLER

• A 50-year-old woman who left her car unlocked when she went inside the Onalaska Post Office to retrieve her mail yesterday afternoon returned to discover her purse was missing. A deputy responding to the approximately 4 p.m. incident noted that  among the items she lost were debit and credit cards, gift cards, her driver’s license and $7 in cash, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

MISSING BIKE

• Centralia police yesterday took a report of black and silver bicycle stolen from the 100 block of South Silver Street.

DOG FISHED FROM DEPTHS OF WATERY HOLE

• Firefighters in Chehalis rescued a dog yesterday that stumbled into a deep culvert, partially filled with water on former farmland. Police, firefighters and the city animal control officer were called just before 10 a.m. to the area west of Interstate 5 and north of the car dealership on Northwest Louisiana Avenue. Police said a man maybe in his 60s was walking his dog when it took off into the brush and trees and dropped into a hole, probably part of an abandoned irrigation pumping system. “There was water, I don’t know how deep the water was,” Community Services Officer Angie Elder said. The medium-sized shepherd mix could be seen paddling about 10 feet down, she said. A ladder was lowered into the opening – which was less than three feet wide – and it disappeared below the surface, she said.  One firefighter was able to lean down into the hole while another held onto him, and lasso the canine with a catch pole, she said. After he was pulled up, he seemed fine, other than being cold and wet and having a small cut near his eye, she said. “When he popped out, he was up and ready to go, he ran back to the pickup truck,” she said.

THEFT

• At least two boxes of rifle ammunition were missing from a garage on the 1800 block of Taylor Street in Centralia following a burglary which was reported to police around 5 p.m. yesterday.

• Centralia police took a report about 9 a.m. yesterday from the 1400 block of Harrison Avenue regarding cash stolen from a parked vehicle.

FRAUD

• Another case of someone using someone else’s social security number to file a tax return was reported to Centralia police yesterday, from an individual at the 1400 block of Joyce Lane.

• An individual called police from the 2800 block of Russell Road in Centralia around 2 p.m. yesterday regarding fraudulent charges discovered on her debit card.

DRUGS

• A 29-year-old Pe Ell resident was arrested last night for possession of methamphetamine and third-degree theft following contact with an officer at the 500 block of South Tower Avenue in Centralia. Steele E. Gove was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.
