TEENS IN TROUBLE WITH ‘SPICE’

• Two teenage boys who were discovered passed out in a parking lot at the 700 block of East Locust Street in Centralia last night had apparently been smoking “spice” – the nickname for synthetic marijuana. The individuals, one 16 and the other 17, were booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center for possession of a synthetic drug, according to the Centralia Police Department.

AUTO THEFT

• A 25-year-old Centralia resident was arrested last night for allegedly stealing a vehicle. Tedy M. St. John was booked into the Lewis County Jail after contact with an officer in association with an approximately 11 p.m. incident at the 400 block of West Main Street in Centralia, according to the Centralia Police Department.

STOLEN STATUE

• Centralia police were called to the 1200 block of Johnson Road yesterday about noon regarding the theft of yard statues during the night.

DRUGS

• A 28-year-old Olympia resident was arrested for possession of heroin after contact with an officer about 11 p.m. at the 800 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia. Jamie L. Cline was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

CATCH AND RELEASE

• A 37-year-old Centralia man was arrested yesterday evening for failing to stop when signaled by a police officer, for resisting arrest and for driving with a suspended license. It happened about 7:15 p.m. at Sixth and B streets and Elisha J. Danielson was arrested and then released, according to the Centralia Police Department.

FRAUD

• A second elderly Lewis County resident was tricked out of thousands of dollars this week by an impersonator over the telephone. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reported yesterday an 83-year-old Winlock-area woman learned on Monday she had won a vehicle but she first needed to send a money order for $365. The following day, the scammer spoke to her again and asked for more money, prompting the woman to mail a personal check for $3,550, Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said. When the individual phoned and said they were on their way to deliver the car, but she should make sure nobody else was around when they came, the woman got suspicious, Brown said. The woman phoned the sheriff’s office and also closed her account, Brown said. Brown said she didn’t know if the personal check was paid out or not. It was on Tuesday when an 83-year-old Chehalis-area woman was talked into getting $2,000 in cash cards for someone who claimed to be her grandson. The sheriff’s office is asking the public to take some time to talk to or watch out for elderly parents and other loved ones to help educate them about the increasingly common scams.

• Centralia police took a report on Wednesday from the 200 block of West Oakview Avenue regarding the unauthorized use of an individual’s identifying information by an unknown person.

ONE OF TWO ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY

• A 21-year-old Centralia man was arrested yesterday morning for allegedly being one of two males who tried to rob a pedestrian on a downtown sidewalk on South Tower Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Joseph J. Bailey IV was ordered held on $25,000 bail today on a charge of second-degree attempted robbery. A man in his 20s told police he was walking home alone from the Hub Tavern when two males he didn’t know pushed him up against the wall of a business and told him to give them his wallet and phone, according to the allegations. A male who was in the area with three others chased the two men off, charging documents state. A warrant has been issued for the second suspect, according to Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer.

STAYING MUM GETS MAN ARRESTED

• A 47-year-old Centralia man was jailed overnight for not providing his name to police. The Centralia Police Department reports Anthony D. Bell was arrested for obstructing a public servant after contact with an officer about 1:50 a.m. at Walnut and Pearl streets.

ASSAULT

• Centralia police took a report on Wednesday regarding a fight between two girls at Centralia Middle School.

OTHER

• Centralia police reported yesterday they were investigating a report of inappropriate contact between an individual and their visitor at a nursing home on the 1500 block of Harrison Avenue.

DRUGS

• A 35-year-old Chehalis resident was arrested early yesterday morning for possession of methamphetamine after contact with an officer on the 700 block of South Gold Street in Centralia. Devin L. Edens was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

COLLISION

• One driver was ticketed for running a red light following a collision at the 200 block of South Pearl Street in Centralia that involved four vehicles, including one of them that rolled, according to the Centralia Police Department. Centralia police responding about 11:35 a.m. report they were unaware of any injuries. Riverside Fire Authority Chief Mike Kytta said one injured person was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital.

POINTING GUN GETS MAN ARRESTED

• A man who pulled a gun after he was punched by his neighbor was arrested yesterday afternoon in Centralia. Deputies called to the 1900 block of Daniels Road learned of an ongoing dispute over “assorted different issues” and were told 58-year-old Michael R. Johnson walked onto his neighbor’s property and began an argument, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said it was about 3:15 p.m. and it appeared Johnson had been drinking. Brown said Johnson provoked one man by walking into him and that man punched him, prompting Johnson to draw his firearm and point it, threatening to kill the man. Brown said when another man stepped outside to see what was going on Johnson did the same to him. Johnson was arrested for first-degree assault and booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

KICKING COP GETS MAN ARRESTED

• A 42-year-old Centralia man who reportedly kicked a police officer for no reason was booked into the Lewis County Jail yesterday for third-degree assault. Terry S. Cortez’s arrest came after contact with an officer about 6:30 p.m. at the 700 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia, according to the Centralia Police Department. The officer had been called to the area for an unspecified reason and when he walked up to Cortez, he was kicked; but was unhurt, police said.

CANDY ASSAULT

• A 28-year-old man was arrested in Centralia yesterday after he allegedly shoplifted a packet of Skittles from a store on the 600 block of South Tower Avenue and then threw them at an employee who confronted him. An officer on patrol about 9 a.m. saw Kevin B. Kempf running from the worker and detained him, according to the Centralia Police Department. Kempf was booked into the Lewis County Jail for third-degree theft and for fourth-degree assault, according to police.

BREAK-INS

• Chehalis police took a report of a burglary yesterday at a home on the 700 block of Southeast Adams Avenue. It appeared someone broke a back window to get inside.  Further details were not available.

• The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office reports this morning that someone got inside a home on the 200 block of Main Street in Onalaska on Monday and rummaged through multiple rooms but nothing was immediately noticed as missing. There was no sign of forced entry, but the 20-year-old resident told a deputy it occurred sometime between 7:30 a.m. and just before 1 p.m.,  according to the sheriff’s office.

CAR PROWL

• Police were called yesterday about two overnight vehicle prowls at the 500 block of Northeast Washington Avenue in Chehalis.

• Someone got into a vehicle on the 500 block of Northeast Jefferson Avenue in Chehalis, rummaged through the glove box, stole an iPhone and left the door open, according to a report made to police yesterday.

ELDERLY RESIDENT TRICKED OUT OF $2,000

• An 83-year-old Chehalis-area woman lost a lot of money yesterday after she tried to do a good deed for her “grandson”, who turned out to be an impostor on the other end of her phone line. The caller asked her to buy $2,000 in pre-paid cash cards to help him make repairs after a car wreck, and even told her his voice sounded a bit different than usual because he’d injured his nose, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The soon-to-be victim went to Safeway and purchased $1,000 in cards, and then made a second trip for another $1,000 because he told her she’d bought the wrong kind, according to the sheriff’s office. It wasn’t until after she’d told him the authorization codes that the woman asked her “grandson” his wife’s name, having grown suspicious, according to Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown. He didn’t know and he hung up the phone, Brown said.

• The accused prolific local trafficker of pain medications sent to prison for 12 years last summer will be back in Lewis County Superior Court tomorrow morning. Forrest E. Amos claims there was a hearing in his case he didn’t attend, Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer said today. Law enforcement estimated that in 2011 when Amos was aggressively dealing Oxycodone, that he was its main supplier within Lewis County, possessing and dealing thousands of pills a month; and they contended he continued to traffic drugs from prison to the outside through others. A plea deal this past summer that helped him avoid a charge of organized crime included an agreement not to appeal his convictions or sentence in any way, according to court documents. Meyer said he doesn’t know that Amos has a lawyer yet to represent him him on his motion, so he didn’t expect anything substantive to take place tomorrow.

The Olympian reports a Centralia man who intervened during an arrest – using a bear hug to pull a deputy away from a suspect and then explaining it was his duty to protect people because he was in the Army – pleaded not guilty yesterday to third-degree assault. News reporter Amelia Dickinson writes that 35-year-old Isidro Garcia-Cisneros was released on his own personal recognizance following the Christmas Day incident at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound.

ROBBERY IN CENTRALIA

• Police are investigating a purported attempted armed robbery that happened overnight on a downtown Centralia street. Officers responded about 2:30 a.m. to the 300 block of South Tower Avenue where a pedestrian said he was confronted by two unknown males who wanted money, one of whom claimed to have a gun, according to the Centralia Police Department. Police learned four bystanders intervened and chased away the would-be thieves. One suspect has been identified and the investigation is ongoing, Centralia police reported this morning.

ASSAULT

• A 65-year-old Centralia man was arrested for second-degree assault on Sunday night for allegedly choking his former roommate. Charles C. Mullins was booked into the Lewis County Jail following the approximately 11:40 p.m. call associated with the 1000 block of Scammon Creek Road, according to the Centralia Police Department. The prosecutor declined to file the charge.

• Centralia police took a report just before noon on Saturday of an assault between two acquaintances at the 600 block of West Main Street that resulted in internal injuries to the victim. Further details were not available.

• Police arrested a 32-year-old Centralia man for allegedly entering his ex-girlfriend’s home – a woman who had a protection order against him – and assaulting her early Sunday morning. Gabriel Sanchez was arrested for first-degree burglary and booked into the Lewis County Jail in connection with the incident on the 600 block of Warsaw Avenue, according to the Centralia Police Department.

STREET CRIME

• Police responding about 11:10 p.m. yesterday to a report of a person in the roadway acting strange, at the 300 block of L Street, arrived to find the 43-year-old man beginning to disrobe. Police say Michael A. Kellogg then dropped to his knees. Kellogg was arrested for disorderly conduct and booked into the Lewis County Jail without incident, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• A 23-year-old motorist was arrested about 3 p.m. yesterday for allegedly driving fast near pedestrians trying to splash them and driving fast through standing flood waters sending wakes into already flooded businesses in Centralia. Officers contacting Tyler J. Aust at the 600 block of West Main Street about 3 p.m. issued him a citation for reckless driving and then released him, according to the Centralia Police Department.

THEFT

• Bradley D. Mitchell, 29, of Chehalis, was arrested on Friday night for third-degree theft for allegedly stealing a security camera off a building on the 100 block of West First Street in Centralia, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• Centralia police took a report about 3:50 p.m. on Friday of a dog stolen from a yard on the 600 block of South Gold Street.

• Someone stole a battery from a travel trailer on the 500 block of South Ash Street in Centralia, according to a report made to police on Friday afternoon.

VEHICLE PROWL

• Chehalis police were called to a car prowl about 4:50 a.m. today at the 500 block of Northeast Adams Avenue. The trunk and door were open and various items strewn about, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Missing are three pairs of sunglasses, according to police.

• Centralia police took a report about 12:50 a.m. on Sunday of a vehicle prowl on the 100 block of South Tower Avenue in which the victim reported a large amount of money missing.

DRUGS

• A 21-year-old Rochester resident was arrested for attempted delivery of marijuana about 11 p.m. on Saturday at the 2000 block of Borst Avenue in Centralia. Alexander R. Logan was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police

• Terry L. Bryan, 34, of Centralia, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine around 7 a.m. on Saturday at the 1200 block of Mellen Street in Centralia, according to the Centralia Police Department. Bryan was booked into the Lewis County Jail,  according to police.

COLLISIONS

• A 20-year-old Rochester resident was arrested about 11:30 a.m. yesterday after he reportedly wrecked his vehicle during a dispute and then wouldn’t identify himself to responding officers. The incident at Seminary Hill Road on and Baker Street in Centralia earned Jared A. Heminger citations for reckless driving and obstruction, according to the Centralia Police Department. He was then released.

• A 78-year-old woman was injured when her Volkswagen Beetle left the roadway, went into a ditch and struck the embankment and a downed tree this afternoon on U.S. Highway 12 just west of Morton. Marlys A. Sliger was taken to Morton General Hospital after the approximately 2:45 p.m. wreck, according to the Washington State Patrol.

• A 92-year-old Toledo man was cited for failure to yield when he pulled his farm tractor from a driveway yesterday and collided with a passenger car traveling along the 700 block of Jackson Highway near Toledo. The 62-year-old driver of the Toyota Cressida ended up with neck pain and her car sustained major damage, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. It happened about 11:40 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

HOSPITAL ASSAULT

• Centralia police arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a nurse in the emergency room at Providence Centralia Hospital on New Year’s Eve. Travis D. Compton, of Chehalis, was booked into the Lewis County Jail for third-degree assault following the approximately 10:15 p.m. response to the 900 block of South Schueber Road, according to the Centralia Police Department.

DRUG VIOLATION

• A 25-year-old Centralia man was arrested last night after an alleged attempt to return for money something shoplifted earlier in the day at Wal-Mart. Police called about 6 p.m. to on Northwest Louisiana Avenue caught up to their suspect in a parking lot north of Wal-Mart and found suspected drug paraphernalia in his car, according to the Chehalis Police Department. Brett A. Warness was booked into the Lewis County Jail for a violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act, for a Department of Corrections warrant and also for burglary, as he had previously been told to stay out the store, according to police.

GUN CRIME

• A 39-year-old Centralia man was arrested for felon in possession of a firearm associated with a response about 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at Chestnut and Ash streets in Centralia. Bradley M. Pedersen, was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.

BREAK-IN CENTRALIA

• Centralia police were called just after noon on Wednesday to the 500 block of East Maple Street about a residential burglary.

OTHER THEFT

• Centralia police were called about 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday to the 1500 block of Harrison Avenue regarding theft of money from residents in the facility.

BOY ROBBED ON STREET

• Chehalis police are looking for the person who stole a set of headphones right off a teenage boy’s head while he was out walking yesterday evening. An officer called about 7:40 p.m. learned it happened in the 200 block of Southwest 15th Street, according to the Chehalis Police Department. The 15-year-old boy was unhurt, detective Sgt. Gary Wilson said.

MOTORBIKE STOLEN

• A deputy was called yesterday afternoon to the 8100 block of U.S. Highway 12 in Glenoma where a man said someone had taken his motorcycle from his front yard sometime since Sunday. Missing is a red 1982 Honda CT1108 valued at $750,  according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

MEDS MISSING

• Centralia police took a report yesterday from the 1500 block of South Gold Street from a woman regarding the theft of a half bottle of morphine pills.

HANDBAG TAKEN FROM LOCKER

• A purse was stolen from an employee locker area at Providence Centralia Hospital, according to a report made to police yesterday. It appeared the locker was opened with some sort of device or even a key, according to the Centralia Police Department.

BACKPACK LIFTED

• An individual who left his backpack with his bicycle outside a convenience store on the 500 block of North Tower Avenue in Centralia called police when the pack was stolen yesterday. An officer called about 7 p.m. was told that among the items it contained were a wallet and food, according to the Centralia Police Department.

STRANGER BREAKS DOOR, COMES INSIDE

• Chehalis police say a resident on the 300 block of Northwest Chehalis Avenue reported he was in his room yesterday morning when he heard a noise and then his door opened and a male he did not recognize was standing there. An officer called about 11:45 a.m. found the front door open and broken from its frame, according to the Chehalis Police Department. The resident said the intruder left quickly and it wasn’t clear if anything was missing from the home, according to police. The intruder is described as a white male who appeared to be in his early to mid 20s, with a short, full-faced beard and wearing a black beanie cap,  department spokesperson Linda Bailey said.

MAN ON GROUND KICKED

• A 24-year-old Centralia man was arrested for fourth-degree assault yesterday after he allegedly kicked a 51-year-old homeless man who was sleeping behind a church on the 400 block of North Tower Avenue. Officers responding about 4 p.m. learned the suspect then rode off on his bicycle, but he, Lucas D. Bryan, was subsequently located, issued his citation and then released, according to the Centralia Police Department.

TRICKED ON CRAIGSLIST

• Centralia police were called yesterday to the 1500 block of South Gold Street by a 43-year-old man who had been trying to sell roof trusses on Craigslist and lost some $2,000 in the process. He received a check from a supposed purchaser for more than his asking price and returned the difference to the supposed buyer, according to the Centralia Police Department. The original check was bad, according to police. The “buyer” didn’t pick up the trusses, so the victim didn’t lose those, Sgt. Kurt Reichert said.

FRAUD

• Centralia police took a report from an individual at the 300 block of North Tower Avenue yesterday regarding unauthorized expenditures that appeared on their account following the loss of a debit card.

DENTIST’S TOOLS SPIRITED AWAY

• Police were called to Valley View Medical Center on Northeast Kresky Avenue in Chehalis, where a patient was seen by an employee allegedly leaving with some dental instruments. He denied taking them, but a citation for third-degree theft will be issued to Stanley  A. J. Pesicka, 31, of Onalaska, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

BURGLARY CENTRALIA

• A Stihl chainsaw with an 18-inch bar is missing after a break-in to a business on the 2500 block of Sandra Avenue in Centralia. It happened sometime between Friday and yesterday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

BURGLARY CHEHALIS

• Chehalis police took a report about 5:30 p.m. from an individual at the 300 block of Southwest Third Street from an individual who said they returned home from going out to dinner and discovered medication including oxycodone missing from the unlocked apartment.

PARCELS STOLEN OFF PORCH

• Centralia police were called yesterday morning to the 2800 block of Russell Road where a resident reported the theft of packages from their front porch. Missing are a remote control car, airplane and a doll, according to the Centralia Police Department.

WRECKS

• No serious injuries resulted but firefighters and medics responded around 6 o’clock yesterday morning to a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 12 near Kiser Road and then to the area near Larmon Road where a responding trooper lost control of his car because of icy conditions. The trooper’s vehicle left the highway to the right, entered a ditch and struck a sign, according to the Washington State Patrol. Lewis County Fire District 8 Chief Duran McDaniel said he was told by his crew it was so icy, it was even difficult to stand up on the pavement.

• Two people were injured in a six-vehicle collision yesterday on Interstate 5 just south of Woodland that included a 43-year-old Toledo man driving a Freightliner with two trailers carrying chickens, according to the Washington State Patrol. Troopers called at 3:30 p.m. report a pickup truck lost control trying to avoid traffic in the left lane that was out with a loose dog and when the pickup truck came to rest, it was hit by a semi truck. Three vehicles that slowed were then struck by the Freightliner driven by Robert L. York, of Toledo, according to the state patrol. York was cited for following too closely and going too fast, the investigating trooper reports. The northbound lanes were partially blocked for several hours. The (Vancouver) Columbian reports 50 to 60 chickens got loose when some of the crates hauled by York broke open and had to be rounded up.
