CHEHALIS – A 57-year-old Randle man is presumed drowned after going into a fishing pond to help a child who encountered trouble in the water yesterday in East Lewis County.
Deputies called about 7 p.m. to the area by Lake Scanewa along the 800 block of Falls Road spoke to three Randle boys and learned what had occurred within the previous half an hour or so.
When the 10-year-old found himself closer to deeper water, had difficulty swimming and screamed for help, the man took off his boots and entered the water, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
At some point, he had difficulty himself and went under, Chief Deputy Bruce Kimsey said today.
The sheriff’s office this morning was reaching out to dive teams from Thurston and Pierce counties to assist in locating the victim, Kimsey said.
The pond was described as 15 to 20 feet deep and about the size of three or four swimming pools, according to Kimsey.
Among the several witnesses were the boys, ages 10, 12 and 13. Kimsey said the man was a family friend who brought the kids to the fishing spot. His identity has not been released.
Update: Just after 1 p.m. today, the sheriff’s office said the victim was recovered by divers.
