CHEHALIS – The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office yesterday reported they investigated after a Morton teen shot himself with a gun he thought was unloaded over the weekend.
The 19-year-old was wounded by a bullet that struck him at the bottom of his neck, traveled through his mouth and was lodged behind his nasal cavity, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies called to Morton General Hospital about 10:15 p.m. on Saturday spoke to the victim and two of his friends, and learned it occurred at a residence on the 800 block of Davis Lake Road, Chief Deputy Dusty Breen said.
The 19-year-old had entered a bedroom to retrieve a 22 caliber handgun, was unaware the firearm was loaded and intentionally pulled the trigger, Breen said. The friends drove him to the hospital.
While deputies were at the hospital, the victim was being prepared for airlift to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for surgery, according to Breen.

Passive aggressive compliments from you DrGringo my xenophobic friend, seem about as natural as an oral bowl movement.
I, for one, am thankful that we have superior people like Tragic to smugly let us know how stupid the rest of us are and how we should be more like him/her. Muchas gracias, Tragic…we can ALWAYS learn from our betters such as yourself.
I was making a distinction between the white trash who vote in this county, and the people who live in east county who could plausibly have legitimate day to day use of firearms, and the people who’s numbers win elections and pass measures an laws. If you are from Morton and a gun goes off in your hands with its pointed towards your neck/face/head, it’s not lack of familiarity with firearms, it’s stupidity or a suicide attempt.
White trash voters keeping people armed in rural areas? You smoking crack? Even if laws were passed the govt could never disarm the people no govt has been successful in doing so. With a open border with countries like Mexico and Canada this will never happen. Quit pulling the liberal hipster persona that is played out as well.
I have to say this Tragic, W. T. H. does being from Morton make inevitable for such a tragedy? Shit happens every place but honestly I hear of less accidental shootings happening in Morton that a shit ton of other places. Also this not the time to play the blame game. Think of other people get out judgmental
thinking for just a moment and have some compassion.
While I agree ice princess, I dont think any amount of instruction on proper use of firearms would have affected the outcome any, I mean it isn’t complex. Step one: Point Gun at head. Step Two: Pull Trigger.
I mean accidents happen, but no amount of training prepares someone for waking up one day to realize that you live in Morton, but thank god you live in a county with a bunch of white trash voters that don’t mind if the people who live rurally have fire arms.
Having taught firearm safety to children, I think this is a good idea. Very small children should be taught to never touch a gun and to immediately tell an adult if they find one. The NRA has some excellent curriculum on gun safety, but unfortunately by taking a no compromise political stand on the 2nd Admendment, the NRA is being pushed aside by the overwhelming majority of Americans who favor reducing gun violence through legislation in this country.
This is why teaching firearm safety should be taught in school. This is why! Yeah I said it. In school! Gradeschool even.
