News brief: Adna teen finds dead birds left on his windshield at school

CHEHALIS – No criminal charges will be filed against two Adna High School students implicated in defiling a fellow student’s vehicle with dead baby birds and derogatory messages.

The incident was investigated at the request of the victim’s grandfather, but the boy told a deputy yesterday he did not want to press charges, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

The grandfather contacted the sheriff’s office at the beginning of last week to report someone had thrown birds against the vehicle and written “I love (the N word)” and “I love men” in blood, according to the sheriff’s office.

A deputy responded to the high school and found the rear window of the Toyota 4Runner dusty with a freshly cleaned area and was told dead birds had been found under the windshield wipers and on the ground, according to the incident report.

The deputy interviewed the principal, the two suspects and their parents and was told by one of the suspects they’d found an abandoned nest with four deceased baby birds in the dugout at the baseball field and that they “smeared” the birds on the 4Forerunner, the report relates. The second suspect admitted he wrote one message on the vehicle and then wiped it off.

The victim’s parents also told the deputy they did not want to pursue criminal charges, according to the deputy’s report.

The deputy noted the video footage he viewed was grainy and it wasn’t clear exactly what the two boys were doing at the vehicle and also that he couldn’t tell if the birds were actually thrown or if they were alive.

The incident report notes the school principal suspended one student for two days and the other student for three days.

Intimidating a white boy for dating a black girl by trashing his car is merely “kids being kids.” Maybe in 1933 Germany.

  2. . says:

    Bo,
I don’t think you understand what was written on the car, or why it was written on the car. The victim is dating an African American girl from the same school. If you know Adna, then you would know there is very little diversity. She is the only African American in the high school. It almost sounds like you think just anything was written on the car. But that is not the case, what was written according to the police report was ” I love (the N word)” these young boys were aiming this racial slur at the boy for dating the young lady. This is no “kids being kids” this is racism, a hate crime, and there is absolutely no exscuss for that. The school is trying to hide the racial slur and trying to make a big deal about the birds so everyone doesn’t realize what was said. It makes the whole ordeal seem less “evil”. It’s a really sad and very messed up that those kids thought it was okay or even funny to do what they did. Parents won’t “whoop their ass” because they refuse to believe their kids did it. How are these kids supposed to learn what they did is wrong if they hardly get in trouble for something as horrible as a hate crime. Yes, the bird part was very messed up too, but a hate crime is something that should not be happening anytime or anywhere by anyone. Most of us will not understand the true meaning or how it feels to be a victim of a hate crime, because it has simply not happened to the majority of us. But that doesn’t mean because we don’t understand that we should just think it’s not a big deal or just sweep it under the rug.

This definitely was a criminal act! And should be treated as such!

  4. Teresa Guerrero says:

Wow,I can’t believe that you can condone this behavior. You are as loco as these kids!HOPE you are not a parent, or just maybe you are theirs.

  5. Bo Rupert says:

Ok, so some kids pull a prank on another kid with dead bird and write on his car and you guys are all for locking them up? I am not saying that they don’t deserve an asswhooping from mom and Dad, I am saying though there is no need to lock the up.

I’m not buying the two separate incidents either. Sounds like Outdoorsman is so desperate to believe in the innocence of these boys he has thrown common sense out the window. What happened is sickening!! To have it minimized and deflected onto others is insulting. Also, Bo Rupert, if you think this is normal adolescent behavior you are deeply disturbed.

  7. Anonymous says:

The allegations that these are two separate incidents doesn’t make sense. I would be very hard pressed to believe that one of the boys didn’t write the racial slur while the other one wrote “I love men.” You really want us to believe that later someone decided to write a racial slur? The kids that came out three hours later were obviously just looking at the scene. If there was another group of kids, how come they aren’t being investigated or punished for their part? If things don’t make sense they don’t make sense for a reason, and to say that the two who initially smeared and left the birds on the car and wrote “I love men” did not also write the slur is absolutely asinine.

  8. Pea body slim. says:

Your right Bo they do not need a criminal record. But appropriate punishment should be served out…

  9. Outdoorsman says:

As the principal said himself “The rumors are rampant. I feel bad because I can’t share more.” There are two very big differences in the articles that have been published one states something was written in dust one states it was written in blood. The article also states two additional boys from the ones punished for the bird portion were spotted near the vehicle. Sounds to me like there may have been two separate incidents that are being combined into one. From what I can tell by reading the articles the boys who place the already deceased birds on the vehicle were completely separate than the individuals that wrote the racial slurs. Before people are quick to judge the parents in this situation they may want to get the complete facts. There is a reason why no criminal charges were filed, if they were truly criminal charges the parents of the “victim” would be given no choice if charges were filed or not if it truly was criminal activity. People are so quick to judge especially with technology these day without knowing the fact. I have to agree with”Bo” on this one thank god they aren’t criminalizing kids for being kids. Like “Steve” said don’t shame their families and damage the futures of the kids for a stupid choice they made. Trust me knowing the very involved stable parents of these young men I’m sure they have been punished harshly. It is my understanding this case is closed… oh and “JUST CRAZY” you are odviously infiltrated in the Adna Community “I bet one of them is an athlete and will still be allowed to play in today’s game. Or will they just let it go. Let’s just wait and see what happens in Adna.” This occurred ten days ago I believe there has been 4 or so games since the incident occurred. Why the heck would they be removed from sports for something they have already been punished for? One did 2 days of in school suspension and the other 3 days out of school suspension for. What does that have to do with sports? It also seems strange to me that the victim’s family just wants this dropped and no charges filed yet someone is still pushing this issue calling the news, media, TV stations etc. Also the rumor that one student was suspended from the baseball team but another wasn’t is completely a lie and another false rumor. I encourage anyone who has questions on this issue maybe you should contact the school, the school board, or the sheriff’s office since this incident was investigated by all 3 entities, punishment was handed out accordingly and the incident has been over for 10 days. As an unbiased father in the Adna community I am disgusted that rumors have gotten so out of control. I’m disgusted that the parent who has a lengthy criminal history of her own has taken it upon herself to slander and character assassinate two young human beings and their families. There is definitely more to this story. As a concerned parent who knows all families involved was shocked and knew something didn’t make sense when I first heard some of the outlandish rumors associated with this story. I contacted a board member to get the story set straight for my own piece of mind. I was shocked to find out the real story as it was so far from the rumors that were circulating. I understand it’s the job of the news to “MAKE NEWS” of something. I definitely encourage people who are not directly involved but just have to know the story and want to talk about it go to the school board or the school and get the whole story before you continue to assume the rumors you are hearing are facts.

  11. BobbyinLC says:

    Strange upbringing Bo.

  12. Joey says:

Their parents don’t care, one of the parents said “it’s what country boys do”

  13. Steve1 says:

STFU BO RUPERT, YOU FREAKING POS!!

  14. Steve says:

Im dissapointed this occurred in Adna, maby the military is a good idea for them to learn dicipline instead of shaming their families and damaging their futures.

  15. Mom_NW says:

Normal children don’t put dead animals on vehicles. That is not “kids being kids”.

  16. Sunshinegirl says:

Oh they will be criminals soon enough.

  17. Teresa Guerrero says:

Whether they were dead birds or alive, this is despicable.I hope their mom and dads beat their ass. There is something wrong with kids that would do and say these things to anybody! Disgusting!

  18. Bo Rupert says:

Thank God! for once they aren’t going to criminalize kids for being kids.
