Morton Police Officer Perry Royle died yesterday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was 54.
Royle was on duty a week earlier when he suffered an unspecified medical issue, summoned help and and then lost consciousness at the hospital.
A procession of law enforcement officers from various agencies accompanied Royle’s body back to Lewis County yesterday evening, ending at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Chehalis. A candle light vigil was planned in Morton.
Royle had been with the department since 2002, and was Chief Dan Mortensen’s only officer.
Morton Police Department Clerk Michelle Matchett said Royle’s family, and Chief Mortensen, were with him when he passed.

Just a quick Thank You to the Royle Family and perhaps some comfort in knowing he is truly missed.
It’s already one year since we lost a friend; and it seems like yesterday.
God Bless you
Perry was, among an officer of the law, a father, brother, Uncle, friend to most all of the community. Although the words “to protect and to serve” are no longer printed on the doors of police cars, Perry still up held that oath, he did his job with a lot of heart and concern for all involved with his encounters as a police officer. He laughed, joked around, and at times during arrests. He loved his community and the people especially the young. You Perry Royle will be greatly missed as an officer, a friend, and a pillar to look up to with in this community. Thank you.
Our hearts go out to his children and his family.
My heart goes out to the Royle family and the City of Morton. I am not a full time resident, but for the last five years have spent most weekends in Morton. I never really knew Perry, but would see him around town while walking or driving. He would always either nod his head or wave when I would see him on occasion. He knew who was “coming and/or going” out of Morton–he knew who we were whether we were residents or part-time residents. I pray for peace for his family and friends! The City of Morton lost a great friend!
This is very sad news. My sympathies to his family and friends.
I found Perry to be a very helpful person. I have never been arrested or even visited anyone in jail , that said I have to tell you a story about Perry. I was in a situation where I did nothing criminal but due to a diminishing memory, due to age I guess it sure looked like I was committing a crime. Lucky for me I called the police and they sent Perry. I met him half way between my house and Morton. I had to have my son drive I was so upset. I explained to Perry and he was very understanding. I told him my biggest fear was he would arrest me in front of my Grandchildren. He exclaimed that he would never do that and considering my age and job, he knew I was not guilty. He was so kind and I was so embarrassed and scared. I will never forget that kindness and how lucky we were as a community to have him. My Grandchildren have gone to school with his children , They have taken this hard also. I am sure a lot of people have stories that show what we will all be missing now that he is gone.
Thank you for your service! May God bless your family.
