Grandma victim of nighttime robbery at Rochester medical marijuana-growing home

A grandmother was tied up with duct tape in a home invasion robbery north of Rochester early this morning while she was babysitting her grandchildren.

Deputies were called to the 15000 block of Case Road after the approximately 2 a.m. incident in which two safes were stolen, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

“They break down the front door, both armed with guns and they demand to know where the money is,” sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said this afternoon.

The 8-year-old girl woke up while the subjects were inside and they basically told her to stay in her room, Elwin said. The 3-year-old was sleeping, he said.

The older child helped untie her 64-year-old grandma and they called 911, he said.

“The twist on this whole thing is these people are involved in a co-op, they grow medial marijuana on the property,” Elwin said.

Elwin said it appears the home was targeted by someone who knew the owners were out of town. The parents were in Portland and returned home right away, he said.

Deputies don’t have a good description, as both males had their faces covered, he said.

Detectives conducted their scene investigation today and will be interviewing the residents tomorrow to learn more about what was taken, he said. The robbers dropped some jewelry and electronics on the way out, he said.

“We’re still trying to figure out what was in the safes,” he said. “Probably cash and product.”

He said the couple are operating a legal operation and supplying product to dispensaries.

Pssssh….”big city crime” is here? Not sure where you have been, but Lewis County, has for many years been a haven for the derelicts of society. The meth monkeys have been running amuck stealing everything that isnt bolted down for decades. Perhaps the drug abuse epidemic could be addressed, and maybe, just maaaaaybe….it would be safe to park your vehicle on a city street in Centralia~

Big-City crime is here folks. Get used to it or get a gun. You can never be too careful when it comes to protecting your family and property.

These thugs target individuals they think will have large sums of cash or valuables on hand. They don’t just target legal medical marijuana co-ops. They also target bank employees, people with nice-looking homes, people who drive nice cars, people who make bank deposits at night after late shifts at work, etc.

The very best thing a person can do is arm themselves; if not with a gun, then with the knowledge that you can be next.

As resources dwindle, and foreclosures rise, and more children are born, there will be an increase of free-range idiots looking to steal what they are too lazy to work for, or what they are too stupid to learn how to make for themselves.

It’s nice to shed crocodile tears for the children involved while simultaneously condemning what is basically a legal co-operative for medical patients, but what about the children of the thieves? Have you thought about that?

I feel more pity for the scumbag thief’s child/children than I do for the successful small business owner’s kids.

I sure wish people would consider their children’s safety before having these so called “legal” operations. You’re only asking for trouble when you participate in such. Thank God these kids weren’t injured or worse.

Michelle, do you have anything to add that is of VALUE to this article? Perhaps you could enlighten the readers instead of blasting the report and adding nothing but vulgarity and poor grammar.

I am sad for the children involved here – how scary to wake up to such a scene! I hope this encourages them to have a life away from drugs – legal or otherwise.

  8. bahlsdeep says:

Lt Elwin, you are incorrect. This is not a legal operation if they are selling, gifting or donating any of their growing marijuana to dispensaries or Hemp Fest. The voters in 1998 agreed to allow 15 plants and over 1 pound of product. This is all intended to self medicate and not become a business opportunity like it has increasingly become.

This is just the beginning of these types of crimes. It will only get worse from here, and you have Washington voters to thank for it.
