CHEHALIS – A jury took less than an hour today to convict accused gang member Joshua Rhoades as charged, for a roughly 30 to 40 second fight earlier this year on a Centralia street in which a 17-year-old boy was knocked unconscious.
Rhoades, 32, told police he was the one who got jumped, after three young men rushed his car at South Tower Avenue and Cherry Street the night of Jan. 31.
The trial in Lewis County Superior Court began Wednesday. A panel of six men and six women began deliberations about 2:15 p.m. today.
Prosecutors said Rhoades jumped out of a car, flashing gang signs and asking the teen and his friends if they knew who he was and if they were rival “Nortenos”. The teenager Dustin McLean testified on Wednesday that Rhoades held a closed knife in his fist as he struck him.
The brief brawl included two of Rhoades’ companions as well as at least two of the three boys. McLean said he was hit well over 20 times.
Rhoades was convicted of second-degree assault, with a deadly weapon enhancement and a so-called aggravator that the incident was intended to enhance Rhoades’ affiliation in a street gang. The finding means he faces the possibility of getting sentenced to the maximum of 10 years in prison.
Police say the Centralia resident belongs to the LVL and goes by the street name Spooker.
Defense attorney Chris Baum argued that at worst the conduct was misdemeanor assault, as he described in closing statements the mark or abrasion on the teen’s face didn’t amount to substantial bodily injury.
One of the other participants, Michael J. Daily, 25, was also charged with second-degree assault but has made a deal with prosecutors, according to Baum.
Judge James Lawler handled the case.
Rhoades will be back before a judge next Thursday to set a date for sentencing.

The last people willing to face the truth about guys like this are the ones who’ve been enabling him all along. Admitting he’s done wrong would be admitting they’ve been wrong, too.
Also I would like his friends and family to just take a moment to recall his history before you get angry at what those on the outside looking in must think. As a small example, type his name in the sirens search engine (in the upper right corner) and just see what comes up. He is constantly involved in some kind of violent crap, even when he’s not the accused. He can’t stay out of trouble or away from BS.
While a lot of people putting in their 2 cents might not “know him” (lucky them), any of them can look up his history anywhere, and I imagine they are using the same system of judgement as the court uses. That’s why they call it a record. It’s a history of what they have done in the past used to judge what they might do in the future or have done in the present. If he had any proof that he’s changed his ways or his life, his lawyer would have shown it to the judge and jury as evidence that he has better things to do than what he was accused and convicted of… But, he didn’t because no such proof exists. He’s still doing the same old shit as last year, and the year before that, and the decade before that. We don’t have to know him because his criminal record, gang associations, and involvement in every other story on the sirens speaks miles about him. So give it a rest.

Once again it’s always the same when trash defends trash; “you don’t know him” “don’t judge him” and here we have; “you don’t know what goes on in his house” and “you should mind your own business” and even “worry about your own children”. Sounds like a Jerry Springer segment.
I am worried about my own children that’s why I’m glad he’s off the streets, hopefully for the 10 year max. I wonder if you would have the nerve to tell the parents of the 17 year old he attacked, to mind their own businesses and worry about their own kids.
I know exactly who he is and what he’s about. Suffice it to say only that. He has been a blight on this community for nearly 2 decades and he always will be nothing but a cretin, and one of the many dregs of society. People keep saying he’s doing nothing wrong and just taking care of his kids and wife (lol who was the dim bulb he talked into the back alley justice of the peace marriage?)…ok so what I want to know is, where is he working at? If no job then is he attending college? If he (as I suspect) is not doing either than other than robbing, stealing, and selling drugs how is he “taking care of his wife and kids”? Does the gang he was trying so hard to improve his status in pay him per random street beating?
These attempts at his defense, are as pathetic as the ones his court appointed attorney must have used to try and get him acquitted. The only person you should “thank” is childish is your friend who at 32 years old beat up a minor to beef up his street cred with a gang of losers who will all one day either be shot in the street or shanked in the prison yard. They have no future. I hope the only person “Spooker” is concerned with impressing from now on is his probation officer. While some people might be a bit mean about it the truth is, he is setting a sad example for his kids.

I know this guy and have known him for a long time. he is a very good father if you want to believe that or not. so you thank his children would be better off without him, is messed up and until you know what goes on in his house you should keep your nose in your own business and worry about yourself and your choldren
About time this 2 bit hood will be getting sentenced to something more substantial than the other times. Under the SRA ( sentence reform act) these charges will up his point total to where the standard sentence range will be quite high on the next conviction. If I remember correctly Rhoades still has other charges pending from other crimes. Good job jury.
