New traffic cameras along Interstate 5 between Grand Mound and Tumwater will be turned on in the morning, to help motorists get a real-time look at travel and road conditions.

Six cameras will go live at 7 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

“We want people to know what conditions on this stretch of I-5 are like before they leave the house,” WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator Kevin Dayton stated in a news release. “It’s all about keeping drivers informed so they can avoid possible delays.”

The south Thurston County traffic cams installed between exits 88 and 95 are part of four projects totaling $390 million to improve flow along an 18-miles stretch of the freeway between Lewis and Thurston counties, according to DOT.

The projects are being paid for from the 2003 and 2005 gas-tax packages, according to the news release.

This project will pay for itself once the cameras start sending speeding tickets to you.

  2. Enforcer says:

Now the department of transportation wants to tax the public for the miles they drive. We are not using enough gas for taxes because we buy cars that burn to little gas and they will not have enough tax money to operate.

  3. Concerned says:

The people voted and got what they voted for. Liberal politicians who spend what they don’t have.

  4. Enforcer says:

This is the reason the meat heads in Olympia can not balance a budget. They do not have the money to keep the basics they are supposed to do – like law enforcement and fire protection. There is not much of a reason to have the cameras in this area. Why do we keep putting the same morons in the department of transportation and the legislators. I guess it is fun to spend tax payers money so irresponsibly . Anybody could have put them in for one hell of a lot less money than $390.000.000 This is crazy.

gas tax packages 2003/2005 + high interest bearing accounts = BIG $$$$$- – – why did they hold the funds for almost 7-8 years?—must have love that interest rate.

Traffic Camera’s Installed. Big Brother is saying it’s for real time road conditions, yeah right. The facts are the Camera system is a Liscense Plate Reader System, next a “Face” identification sytem will be programed into the system as well… All in the Name of Traffic Safety, What a Lie… Big Brother is Watching You!
